Random rotation of instances over time?

Hi,

I'm working on a project where I have an instance of a model. I want it to randomly roatate over time, and I'm sending it out as a surface emitter.

I've looked on google, and tried figuring it out throught the docs, but can't seem to get it working.

FIRST why does this have to be so hard? It seems to me like this would be something everyone would want for meteor fields, medical animation and the like

SECOND is where can I find instructions on how to do this? I found some on Curve flow, but nothing on an emitter.

Thanks

Dave

Hello,

Thank you for posting to The Area Forums.

There are a few different way to accomplish this. I have created a video showing how to go about the easiest way to set this up:

https://screencast.autodesk.com/main/details/4f8eb1b2-6421-4e3e-9b7d-36a21a8d7a31

If you were using floating objects that aren't really colliding or you wanted to begin the rotation at particle birth then, the use of an expression would be needed. I found the following link which shows a workflow with an expression:

http://www.cgarena.com/freestuff/tutorials/maya/expressions/

Expressions can then be edited to meet the needs of your animation.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

ok, this did not work on my scene, so I need another solution

I'll have to send this to you through the bug report or something.

Hi,

Just making sure you got my file. You should be able to see that it's not working.

Hello,

I have created the following video showing how to set this up, in case others run into this issue too:
