Help Stretching in two directions

I read in another thread that if you set a linear parameter to the midpoint you can stretch in two directions at once. I can't seem to get it to work is there something I'm missing?

I've included the block I'm trying to stretch. I am using 2006.

Any help would really be appreciated.

You have to have a stretch action for each end if you want it to stretch from the middle to both ends.
