Important! VoloView Express is being phased out

Got this yesterday

Autodesk® Developer News: SPECIAL EDITION

Do you use Whip! ® or Volo(tm) View Express?

March 19, 2003

___________________________________________________________________

Are you using Whip! Or Volo View Express? If yes, be sure to read this.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-

With the release of the 2004 family of products and investments in making
DWF(tm) the industry standard for publishing and sharing design information,
we are making changes in our viewing technologies that will affect everyone
that currently uses Whip! And Volo View Express today.

We need your feedback on these changes by Monday March 24th.

These changes include:

* DWF Viewing

Whip! and Volo View Express are being replaced by Autodesk® Express Viewer.
Over the next few months, Whip! and Volo View Express will be phased out and
will no longer be available to customers and developers.

Express Viewer will only display DWF files. No DWG. No DFX. Will this
change?

No. To read DWG files requires a 20 meg download. No one likes that. AEV is
lightweight and accomplishes what it needs to. Adobe does not make a Word
Doc reader -- it makes a PDF reader and writer. Autodesk is going to make a
DWF reader and writers.

Will we continue to have DWF Plotting capabilities within AutoCAD? Will
coordinates continue to be supported in the viewer?

Will Voloview Express still be available in it's current version for reading
dwg files? Just no new updates??

Yes. AutoCAD 2004 had a publish button that generates a DWF6 file which has
enough information to be plotted to scale using AEV under the right
circumstances. Autodesk is not walking away from DWF. They are just trying
to solve real problems which include:

a. The Volo View Express download is too big.
b. Sharing DWGs is difficult because of XREFs, fonts, etc.
c. DWGs have legacy implications such as WipeOuts.
d. Distribution of Object Enablers is troublesome at best.
e. Volo View does not have a robust API.

By sharing to ready to view and print DWF files, life is much easier. There
is a small downloadable tool that will meet everyone's needs. The down side
is that "content creators" will have to use AutoCAD to generate DWF files
and send them downstream to others. When problems arise, the DWGs will need
to be updated and the DWF files regenerated. This is a small price to pay to
overcome those other hassles.

I would expect that they would leave it out there for a while -- just like
WHIP!. I could be wrong. I don't work there anymore.

I think there is no point for Adobe making a .DOC viewer. Adobe doesn't
"own" the DOC format, Microsoft does. And they make a free .DOC viewer.
IMHO, Autodesk should make a DWG viewer/redliner which would be easy to
distribute (from the 'license' point of view; technically - 20MB is not a
problem). What DWG2004 viewer will be used e.g. for Buzzsaw?

That is a great question. I can't wait to see how that turns out.

How will this affect the full version of Voloview?

Volo View is not being phased out. Volo View is sold on CD. No one complains
about the download size of Volo View. Volo View is for a specific audience
of dedicated users who need to mark up, measure, and plot to scale as part
of a design collaboration team. For others who just need to view, especially
on an occasional basis, a more lightweight solution is in order. For the
masses that fall into this category, a free and small downloadable viewer is
in order -- Autodesk Express Viewer.

But with Autodesk Express Viewer we have to use a different file format and
maintain duplicated databases.

Instead of calling the program Autodesk viewer, I suggest AutoCAD viewer. We could probably get that on our network with out a long government approval process.

That may be true, but the .dwf file is SO FAST and trouble free. (no
missing font or xref path hassles!)

Try it, you'll like it!

I have. It is just a duplicate database. Nothing good, nothing bad, just
duplicate with all the problems that go with duplicates.

I never have trouble with missing fonts because I use standard ones and not
fancy ones. I put all my symbols in the drawing and not as references so
there are not xfer path hassles. If you are refering to hyperlink paths
that is another matter. Even standard AutoCAD still has some problems with
them.

Something I have done is create a VBA macro in the drawing events "EndSave"
event. The macro makes a dwf file of the drawing every time the drawing is
saved. I have the macro save the dwf file in the same directory as the dwg
file.
