Is there a missing puzzle piece?

Seems to me like there is a missing puzzle piece in the DWF-scheme of
things. Lemme describe it:

I have an AutoCAD drawing.
I want to provide the geometry of said drawing to other clients, who are
AutoCAD dummies.
The AutoCAD dummies want the drawing as _part of a Word specification_.

(Oh sure, I can attempt to copy-n-paste drawing to Word, but linewights and
colors and backgrounds... waving hands above head screaming while bumping
off walls.)

Have you tried to get a DWF into Word?

At least with a PDF I can embed the PDF as an object, and the AutoCAD
dummies can double-click on it to get a clean print. I cannot find a way to
embed the DWF as an object, however. (sigh)

Works just fine for me.
Here are the instructions from my version's help file.
David
Embedding Autodesk Express Viewer in Microsoft Word
With Microsoft Word you can embed the Autodesk Express Viewer control and
reference a DWF file inside of a Word document. You can then distribute the
document to others who have installed the Autodesk Express Viewer control.

When you embed Autodesk Express Viewer in a Word document, you create a link
to a DWF file name for the drawing that you want displayed in the document.
To distribute the Word file to other users, make sure that the DWF file
resides on a LAN or WWW server that users have access to. The alternative is
to distribute the DWF file with the Word document.

Note: Embedding Autodesk Express Viewer in Microsoft Word is only supported
in Office 2000 and later versions.

To create a Word document that contains a DWF file

1.. Start Word.

2.. From the Word Insert menu, choose Object.

The Object dialog box is displayed.

3.. On the Create New tab, choose Autodesk Express Viewer Control from the
Object Type list and click OK.

A box representing the control is placed in your document.

4.. Use the grips on the box to position and edit the drawing area.

You may need to click outside the drawing area, then click back inside the
drawing area to activate the sizing grips.

5.. To set the filename that you want to display, right-click inside the
viewer control and choose Properties.

The Properties dialog box is displayed.

6.. In the SourcePath box type the path to the drawing that you want to
include in the document.

7.. To activate Autodesk Express Viewer, click Design Mode on the Control
Toolbox toolbar.

If the Control Toolbox toolbar is not displayed, from the View menu,
select Toolbars > Control Toolbox.

8.. To save the Word document, from the Word File menu choose Save.

You can now distribute the document with the DWF stored inside the
document. Users who have both Microsoft Word and Autodesk Express Viewer can
view your document including the DWF file.

Well, *this* is interesting... I cannot seem to get the "embed" to stick. I
double-check the SourcePath (FQN filename) and EmbedSourceDocument (True)
properties and they are ok, save the Word doc, open the doc back up and the
control is empty.

Robert,
I don't know why it isn't "sticking" in that document. I tried it and it
seemed to work fine. Maybe someone else has a clue there.

Have you ever gotten the component failure on installing AEV? The one where

David, did you save the Word doc, then come back into the document? Is your

Attached is your file, hopefully with my DWF still in it.

I am using Windows 2000, Microsoft
Office 200 and Express Viewer (build 3.1.0.92).

I haven't gotten that error message.

Well, it appears that the fix for the install bug hoses embedding of DWFs.
(sigh) And it seems that Autodesk cannot find the source of the install
error, even though *every* Windows XP Pro station that I've installed in the
last 9 months produces this install error.

An interesting note: I cannot change the embedded dwf to be a different file
in your sample either. If I change the filename, then save to a new doc, the
old embedded dwf goes along for the ride.

| Attached is your file, hopefully with my DWF still in it.
|
| I am using Windows 2000, Microsoft
| Office 200 and Express Viewer (build 3.1.0.92).
|
| I haven't gotten that error message.

The actual source of the problem is if you modify the control (say, its text
wrapping or position) BEFORE assigning the filename.

I don't run into trouble if I assign the filename first, THEN modify the
control's format.

Do you get the install error? Or was your install ok? Is your system
comparable to mine? You haven't really given us enough to help track down
the problem with that response.
