DWF for Archive records

Anyone from Autodesk want to officially comment on Autodesk's vision and
road map on using DWF files for archive records?

Specifically, I'm interested in differences between DWF formats and if
DWF files created today, will be able to be viewed in the future. If
AutoCAD can open an r8 drawing now, will DWF viewer technology take a
similar approach and always/usually, for a while/never support previous
DWF files format versions?

If it's not expected that older DWF format versions will lbe supported
several releases out, what types of utilities will be in place that
would help to "migrate" or "freshen" the files (something I could write
a batch processor for) at a later date?

Anyone else have comments?

To date the DWF toolkit (common set of code that Autodesk products use to
read / write DWF files) has been extended so that it is backward compatible.
AEV will read DWF files created by R13 for example. The toolkit is available
on the web for download for free. It is reasonable to expect that this trend
may continue. Applications like WHIP! and Volo may come and go, but I think
Autodesk recognizes that the true value is in the customer data.

Thanks for the comments Scott. I sure hope that's Adesk's philosophy. If
people are going to use DWF as record archive solution, it's going to
have to be readable in the future or provide some way of "freshening"
the files to newer DWF formats.

Today we have Autodesk Express Viewer 4 (free
viewer) and Volo View 3 (chargeable DWG and DWF Viewer, redline and more). Both
products read the current DWF format (version 6) and all previous versions of
DWF.

Just like AutoCAD can open historical DWG file
formats, (2000, R14 etc based files) Volo View and Autodesk Express Viewer will
read historical DWF file formats.

We plan and endeavour to maintain this policy going
forward for both DWG and DWF.

For information DWF 6 is the DWF file version
produced from AutoCAD 2004 based products and from AutoCAD 2002 based products
when using the design publishing Extension.

Be careful using DWF to archive. We archived a few drawings with DWF but
never printed them. Now, they simply won't print, and I don't think that
they ever did. The open up in the viewer, but they won't print properly
unless I reduce them to 1/2 size. Make sure you print a copy of every
drawing at least once before you consider it "archived".

Volker,

Thank you for forwarding this and getting me a reply. I appreciate the
help in our research for considering DWF as out record archive solution.

Hi Jon,

What version of DWF was this? Was this recently or past?

For our purposes, viewing only should work but thanks for the heads up.
It's good to know what issues might come up and grab you in the rear.

DWF 6. I am told that the problem I had was due to a large raster, but
there are probably other gotcha's that haven't bitten me yet.

And unfortunately, you never know what they are until you get bit. 😉
