Viewer not truly printing to scale

I was hoping to use this viewer to send 8.5x11 exhibits to clients that are
to scale (1"=20'), but the printed output of the dwf is not to scale.
Actually it is shrunk to approx. 99% of true to scale. When reading about
the viewer and reviewing the comparison chart it was claimed that Express
Viewer "pirnts to scale". Any thoughts / suggestions?

There is no 'to scale' print software for DWG/DXF/DWF that is free: no
place, ever, most likely will never happen either. It's how companies make
money.

Having said that, you can approximate it (not 100%) by plotting your DWF
file to scale to fit a specific sheet size with the most generous of paper
margins to compensate for all the printers on the planet. Similar to PDF
type output.

The alternative of course is to share the DWG file, make sure the recipient
has AutoCAD (or the US$195.00 Volo View version). CADLOCK needed if you
share DWG files.

AEV was created with the ability to print accurately to scale. Unfortunately
some windows system printer drivers do not accurately report the size of the
printable area. AutoCAD gets around this problem by internally maintaining a
large list of printers with the printer specifications for almost all
printers. Then compensating for incorrect information returned from the
printer drivers. This is not an option for AEV because AEV is also required
to be 2MB in size.

That being said, we would like AEV to be as accurate as possible. If you
tell us what printer and OS you are using we will be happy to look into this
problem further.

Dean,

Have you read the descriptions of Express viewer and its capabilities of
plotting to scale? I don't think you have and are quick to the draw on
pushing something that is not needed since the current product handles this
99% of the time.

AEV plots to scale on my end without a hitch.

Ben,

could you please add an option to disable the paper crop marks.
We would like to plot the "inked area" only, using our DesignJet
plotters.

What capabilities? You must have a version I do not, because on my AEV print
dialog box there is no scale setting. There is the interesting
Reduce/Enlarge Drawing (or the Fit to Paper) options in the print dialog box
printing to scale, kinda.
And AEV can print to the scale the DWF is created (whooppeee!) if you have
the same printer and print margins as it was created. But you are not going
to print a 3/16" scale print of an area of the DWF and get it to scale using
AEV.

I think AEV is an improvement of sorts over WHIP!, but let's not say it does
really any more than it can.

Dean,

The problem is that you are using the scale to fit in the DWF printer.
Simple set it to 100% and what ever scale you printed in AutoCAD it will
print. If you don't have a printer that matches the same media size (ie.
24x36 doesn't fit a 8.5x11) then it will be off. I print to a dwf 24x36 and
send to a person 3 floors up for review on the screen and printing. I just
implemented this 2days after the new DWF came out and the client loves it.
It they want to print to a 8.5x11 then I have a conversion chart that tells
them the correct % size they need to set so they are scalable.

The format and program work as mentioned with no degradation in quality or
accuracy.

We both seem to agree on the same limitation, but you call it 'print to
scale', I just call it printing as is.... . Playing the percentage game is
not printing to scale, it is approximating a scale but not printing to
scale.

You and I are getting our terminologies tied up in a twist created by the
fog that Autodesk Marketing created with their iffy wording.

The DWF view is not mean to allow users to modify scale so you can change it
at will. It allows you to print the Scaled plot you plotted from AutoCAD.
I think this where they are not clear to users.

In the full version of Volo (not VV Express), you can reduce the scale,
change the margins or paper size on a DWF.
You could also zoom on a viewport, issue view->refit, zoom out a little to
see the page, and then go to page setup and bump to the nearest standard
scale, then print.

However it is dangerous to blow up the scale or the paper size too much
(more than 2-3X) on a DWF, because the resolution is reduced, distortion
could happen.

Reducing the scale or paper size is always safe. And setting the DWF
resolution in the Plot driver to high is better.
