TURN OFF request for update (for the love of god)

If we are going to continue down this DWF path that Autodesk has set out on, it is an absolute necessity that we are guaranteed some stability.

Here's a scenario (one that we've personally experienced...):

1) Product is developed and tested with the DWF Viewer
2) Product works flawlessly
3) Product is deployed
4) User launches DWF Viewer and is notified that there is a newer version available, would you like to update?
5) Of course they would like to update, newer means better, right?

No way. I've been using this product for the past few years - and my experience is that of a sine wave. It works great / it's full of bugs / it works great / it works like crap again...

We are being forced into programatically watching over the version installed on client machines and taking action if necessary. Would you please just TURN OFF the auto-update? It serves no purpose other than installing an inferior product.

Very frustrated ~ jp

If you are providing a deployment perhaps you have the ability to set the
user registry's with this deployments. The AutoUpdate works off a few keys
found in hkey_local_machine\software\autodesk\dwf viewer\settings\autoupdate

The keys are self explanatory

All that frustration for nothing. I should really post to public forums in the morning after some good rest, rather than at 4am after a few beers.

Installing dwf viewer 7.0 with SetupDWFViewer.msi. Need to be able to grey out the help menu's "register" and "check for updates". Used ORCA to look in registry and property tables but have not found anything that works. does anyone have a clue?

Thanks but don't think the info on the blog is current for Autodesk DWFViewer 7.0.0 and does provide info on greying out help menui items as requested.

Sorry, I didn't look at that part...

You could try to use filemon to check where the menu info is stored.
obviously if it's not in the registry, it must be in the file system.

per Scott Sheppard and John Schmier, disable menu items by modifying the file menubar_exe.htm

helpUpdateMenu.disabled = true
helpRegisterMenu.disabled = true

ALL THE ABOVE "SOLUTIONS" ARE USELESS.

All of the above solutions apply only to IT managers in large firms who have Admin rights over their system.

For the rest of us 'users' and design professionals who have better things to do than stuff around in Windows awful registry, there is no solution. We are stuck with having to remember NOT to click update lest our DWF installtion get borked AGAIN, causing us to lose TIME and MONEY. A simple "Do you want auto-update turned on?" at install would be nice. Geez, we pay $3000+ per licence for most of your software, can't you pay one of the outsourced programmers an extra $5 to add this functionality?

Thank you for your suggestion. It will be considered in a future release.
Autodesk always considers the needs of its many customers when developing
the content for new releases.
