How to draw polygons (like a heptagon) by specifying the size of a single side?

Ok...here's something that I think should be easy to do.  I want to draw several different kinds of polygons with differing numbers of sides.  I want to be able to do this by specifying the size of a single side; to my knowledge there's no easy way to do that, since the POLYGON command only gives you the option to inscribe/circumscribe with circles;  that's not what I want!  I need a bunch of figures with either .75" or 1.5" sides...I know it can be done in Solidworks (and possibly Inventor?) but I really need the functionality in ACAD.  Thanks in advance!

You could draw a polygon at any size and use then use the 'SCALE' (or 'ALIGN') command to make it the right size. If you want a custom tool that draws polygon's this way, you could leave a comment in the programmers forum. I'm sure that someone will be keen to help you get started.

Command: polygon
Enter number of sides <4>: 7

Specify center of polygon or [Edge]: e
Specify first endpoint of edge: Specify second endpoint of edge: *Cancel*
