When I import a DXF file of a gear from Gearotics fusion 360 gives me an error message and shuts down.  Why?

Looking at the Gearotics website it looks like it can output 3d DXF files, to import\open mesh files you need to upload them though the data panel. InsertDXF only opens 2d sketches.

If that doesn't work can you upload a file.

I've uploaded both a 2d and 3d DXF file.  That works except when I thy to work with the file I get a message saying that there is a problem and Fusion 360 is shutting down.  I can sometime extrude the 2d DXK file into a gear but them I have a problem.  Could the amount of data for a 96 tooth gear be a problem?

I'm pretty sure I've seen files from that software and the problem is it's made from hundreds of short lines and it does overload Fusion, not seen it crash though just very slow. Have you tried the gear scripts included with Fusion.

What are the specs of the gear you're trying to make, the gear scripts work in CM for some reason so if you work in inches after it's created you'll need to scale it by 2.54, I think.

Is Art the creator of Gearotics? If so ask if he can make it output splines. I've written a script for Rhino that outputs splines, 96 tooth gear attached it load into Fusion no problem using InsertDXF.

I’m trying to upload a DXF file (Gear Design) from Gearotic. When I do that Fusion give a warning that
Fusion 360 has stopped working and the program is shutting down. Since I’m trying to design clocks
the design of gear wheels is critical so this is a big problem for me.

I’m looking for any help I can get. There was a suggestion that I look at Fusion’s 360’s gear scripts but I have no idea where to find this in Fusion 360.
If anyone can direct me to gear scripts that would be very helpful. Also how actuate of a gear does gear scripts produce?

Thank you for helping,

Michael

post the dxf I will have a look. If it fails for me I will let Art know it may be the .DXF version or type that is failing

Sorry:
I guess that I have not made my issue very clear. I know how to create a DXF file in Gearotic and I know how
to upload it into Fusion 360. It’s after I have loaded the DXF into fusion 360 that when I try to move, modify, etc that it tells me that
Fusion 360 has stopped working and is shutting down.

The DXF file does not have that much data that it should overload Fusion 360 so I’m at a loss.

Thank you for your help,

Michael

I tried to copy the file and send to you but I'm getting that the file is corrupt or incompactable.  So maybe the problem is with the Gearotic DXF file and not Fusion 360.

The file is attached.

Thank you,

Michael

Hi:

I have reviewed the file and it is corrupt. While I dont use splines, no DXF from gearotic is so large that it should really slow anything too much, a few thousand points

at most will be seen. This file though, is corrupted, Im not sure why. Ive tested GM's output to be sure, and I cant see any trouble, dxf's are fine genrally. Contact me on

the GearHeads Forum for this problem if it happens with all gears. You seem to have some output issue...

Hi Art, The trouble is Fusions sketcher really doesn't work well with that amount of information. I think it's because the sketches are parametric, Fusion is doing a lot of extra work compared to most CAD systems. The sketcher is not as fast as the one in Inventor.

@Anonymous where is the file can you post to gearotic forum, it's not a fusion problem it's to do with the file it self some how getting corrupted when you save it out from gearotic.

but onces you have a good file there is some steps that need done before you bring it into fusion, we will do that after you get a clean 2D .dxf file.

Hi everyone,

I have had the similar issue importing from Gearotic into Fusion 360.

Essentially, as Art describes, I get a file with many points. The problem isn't with Fusion crashing. Rather, the problem is that I cannot seem to close the sketch loop in order to provide an extrusion. I posted here the issue here: https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/design-validate-document/svg-import-issue-not-an-accurate-form-and-dx...

I have tried the Add in that helps validate loops and it suggests they are closed, but when I draw a line through, as was suggested, I do see that the loop closes in certain random areas.

Have also attached the file for reference. I am aware of the Gear generator script for Fusion 360, but these are Cycloidic gears, so the Involute profile isn't helpful to me.

I am also posting here simply because I think that the issues may be related... Maybe someone else has found a solution or an effective workflow.

Thanks,

Lukas
