Updating geometry after painting in mudbox - import channel from PSD fails to work

Hi all:

So I'm currently working on a model, and I needed to update the topology of the model. So I did (this model has multiple uv tiles) and went about updating the geometry in mudbox.

What I did was to export the updated mesh out as FBX and bring it into mudbox as a new scene, and then try to just import channel from PSD using my previous texture that I'd saved out. No good, nothing happens. Not even an error message; literally nothing happens which is kinda weird.

So now I'm resorting to doing it via a transfer paint layers operation, which is kind of a pain as I have several layers that have to be projected, one by one, to the newly updated mesh, and it takes a rather long time. Also raycasting results in a lot of texture artifacting all over the model around the seams, even if the area there has the exact same topology, which is kinda bad =\

Does anyone happen to know what I'm screwing up here? I could import a flattened version of the old texture and import that in as my diffuse (not sure how that works with multiple uv tiles though), but I'd rather be able to keep my layers etc.

Is the Import Channel From PSD command tied to specific meshes that it was used for or something? If so, are there any other solutions in this kind of situation?

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure I've done this successfully with non- texture tiled textures, but I've never used texture tiles so I'm not sure how to do it with them. I know the naming of the files is quite specific, but other than that I don't really know. I don't think the textures are tied to the model in any way (except for the UV space they use).

I guess Oglu would know. Might have to wait for him to drop by. 🙂

Oh, after checking the Log, I see this when I'm importing my PSD:

I guess now I know what those weird numbers in the carets are for!

EDIT: Update: yay so removing the numbers in the layer names and then re-importing the channel from PSD works. Unfortunately this necessitates actually going through each layer one by one and removing those characters X_X I wish Photoshop had more batch functions available...

At least I get back my original paint at its original fidelity though 😄
