De-selecting Selection on Base Mesh

When I set a topology axis so I can mirror and I de-select the selection. The base level (faces) parts of the mesh break up and parts are deleted making me unable to set a topology axis !

What you see in the image only happens on the base level, and on the symmetry seam, all other levels are fine.

I think I found the problem, when I go to level 5 there are patches of random sections that are subdivided. If I delete the patches which are selected in mudbox, the entire mesh gets deleted I don't know how the heck this happened as I didn't do anything unusual.

If anyone has any recommendations on how to fix besides retopping which I'm going to go ahead with and hopefully it fixes both problems in one shot, first I'm going to sculpt some more detail 🙂

That looks like the centre seam of your model hasn't been welded properly. Check it in your 3d app.
