Best way to add limbs to a model?

Hello everyone, Im new to Mudbox and sculpting in general, im wondering whats the best way to approach adding limbs to my model. Im working on an insect like creature and i have the main body and head down.

Is it best to use the grab tool and just pull the limbs out and go from there? or model them separately and put it together in maya? It seems like in order to pull out the limbs i need to greatly increase the poly count to have enough geometry.

I eventually want to animate the creature, is it considered bad to have the legs separeate and not really part of one mesh?

if its an insect i would stick them in... there is no need to weld them on...
its also easier to have them seperated later in the workflow...

but if you like the have one single mesh do a retopo afterwards...
