problem with Opera

Only recently, about a week ago, I've had problems with this forum not working with Opera.  I can view the forums fine but as soon as I post I get:

An Unexpected Error has occurred.
Sorry, your request failed. A notification has been sent to the development team for investigation.

Exception ID: 5DF6BDAA

Please click the Back button on your browser.

I get this error everytime I try to post through Opera (posting this with IE).  So, what's changed in the last week or so?

Hi Sam,

We've found out that Opera is an unsupported browser, but we were able to ask that our forum platform provider consider supporting it in the near future, so we'll have to see what happens. I'm still unsure what changed recently that made it so you're unable to post.

In the meantime, you'll have to stick to using browsers such as Chrome, IE, and Firefox to ensure you don't run into issues.

So sorry for the frustration!

That's annoying, especially as it worked completely fine up until about a month ago.

I really must praise Autodesk's choices with this discussion board over the years...

When I first started using this site (about 2002-2003) Autodesk Inventor was organized into releases, so it was easy to know what version users were posting about, but then it got merged into 1 massive forum which often leads to annoyance as users post problems and examples but never state the software version they're using.  There was considerable resistance/concern over this change by the long-term users at the time, but tough - apparently it was easier for AD to monitor fewer forums...  You spend time creating an example part to help explain a solution only to be told their version of the software won't open it - after this happens a few times you soon start to lose interest helping new users to such a degree.

Then we had the move to Lithium and the removal of the nntp service, which was fantastic at being able to view and post without needing to go through a website - far quicker and easier.  Plus it would store all the posts of the desired forums locally so we could search easily at a later date without the need for internet access - yes, i know we have rss feeds, but afaik you cannot reply with that, so it's only 1/2 the solution.  Again, many posts at the time asking for continued nntp support and nowt...

Now Opera's ability to post suddenly goes...  The cynic in me wonders whether this suggests that their code doesn't conform to html standards and Opera suffers?  Opera has always been a "specialist" web browser but it's still used by millions around the world and still scores highly/respectfully in web-browser comparisons (like Tom's Hardware's regular browser grand prix articles).  I also believe it is growing massively within the android device market, which should be considered more and more as tablets like the Nexus7 sell in the way they are.

sorry to moan, but my 10 year history of these forums suggest user's functionality and ease of access only seems to decline over time.

Hi Sam,

I completely get your frustration and we're working hard to get some structure and organization back that will make the forums easier to navigate and use. You aren't the first user with this feedback, and I know you won't be the last until we can address various concerns.

As for Opera, I am entirely unsure of what change was made. If I find out anything, I will definitely let you know.

Please feel free to send me a PM if you have any other concerns or run across more issues. Thank you!

I'm torn over this. While I'd like people to be able to use the browser of their choice to use these forums, I really rather hope that Autodesk doesn't take to supporting Opera on a wider scale. It's only because Opera is an unsupported browser that it's possible to use it as a workaround to avoid that awful Akamai junk that Autodesk insists on putting in the way of doing a straightforward download. Sure, most Autodesk downloads now allow you to avoid Akamai eventually if you click the right cryptic sequence, but who knows if that is going to continue? Using Opera is much more convenient, and if Autodesk took that option away by supporting it, it would be most unfortunate.

Hi Steve,

The whole Opera or No Opera decision actually comes down the Lithium and wouldn't affect the rest of the Autodesk domain. This section of the website operates fairly independently from the rest.

Regardless, it looks like Lithium might be fixing whatever was changed to make Opera go from working to unusable, so it should go back to it's original use state sometime in the near future. No promises though!

Thanks!
