How can you turn off email notification. yet retain the ability to "subscribe" to threads so that they still show up under "My Subscriptions"?

The bookmarking feature was designed for that purpose (same function as subscriptions, but no email notifications).

It looks like the bookmarking feature requires me to "bookmark" each thread, while the subscription feature is automatic.

So you are saying that if subscription is turned on, there is no way to stop the emails from coming in?

If not, I guess I can blacklist the "From" address.....

Correct.  Subscriptions=email.  Bookmarks=no email.  There is not a way to automatically bookmark topics.
