Virus Protection

We are a new firm with about 30 CAD workstations working of two servers.
My question is: can anyone recomend Antivirus protection package that
will protect and update not only servers but also workstations?
I have looked at few but there are rather for BIG enterprise kind of
companies...

Norton Corporate Anti-Virus is the best choice. I can't reacll off the top
of my head, but it runs about $20-$25 a node...a node is defined as any
machine on your network...so you say you have 2 servers and 30 stations you
would need 32 nodes...the way Norton Corporate works is you load the server
software on the servers, you designate one as the "quarantine" for viruses
and designate one as the Liveupdate server (you can have liveupdate and
quarantine on the same server). You designate the schedule for the server
to look to norton's website for new virus patterns, and then the server
automatically distributes the new pattern files to the client machines.

My favorite is Computer Associate's InoculateIT. We've been using it for
over 5 years without problems re AutoCAD & LT. This has been in both a
Novell & NT server environments.

Update distribution can be scheduled or done manually. Installation,
configuration, and monitoring can be done remotely on NT & 2000
workstations.

When we were originally looking Norton was way too expensive for us. Back
then it was Cheyenne's Inoculan and it was a risk, but the 30-day full demo
hooked me and I've seen it's real-time scanner catch stuff that McAfee
missed. The real-time scanner has a memory footprint of only 564k, the job
server (for scheduled scans and updates) is only 6.1 meg, and the
downloader (to get new sigs) is 1.1 meg. The downloader is only run on the
machine that does the internal distribution (or laptops you know won't be
in the office to get updates).

Enjoy,
Stef

As a corporate standard at AT&T, we use McAffee Viruscan for
everything.

Well, it does not look like you are going to get a consensus, but at least a
bunch of choices. We use Trend Micro's OfficeScan. Depending on the
operating system of your server there are a couple of versions. I like it
because it contains ScanMail that interfaces with Exchange to scan incoming
email and all of the mailboxes. Of course it also scans the desktops and
the server, and administration is a breeze. We have had it running for
about 6 months and it has been prefect since installation. I occasionally
check to make sure that everything is going well, and it always is.

Interesting.... you mean there is automated virus software
that will scan the entire network? Cool!

I thought there was only stiff like Norton that one had to
install on every machine.

Not true huh?

Actually the Trendmicro officescan effectively installs a "client" to the client stations.
All updates are done through the server (either IIS or file based, I recommend IIS).
Trend makes great products and is usually one of the first with pattern updates when there
is a new virus.

About 30 minutes after I wrote my post I got an alert from OfficeScan to
notify me that it had found a virus, TROJ_HYBRIS.B, and removed the
attachment and placed it in quarantine. While it was a bit of a trick to
get it working smoothly, I cannot tell you how nice it is to know that we
are about as protected as we could possibly be. That, and I never have to
look after the system. If anyone needs more info on the system let me know.
