Utility needed

Does anyone know of a good utility that would let me scan a network drive and determine how much space is occupied by various file types? I have one that will figure out folder sizes for me, but that's it.

Good 'ol DOS command prompt type:

dir *.DWG /s

Substitute DWG with your own
face=Arial size=2>extension

There is a demo version available for download.
It's kinda cool. I think it'll even do a nice pie chart for you.

That's too similar to what I already have - as far as I can tell, it would let me know how large various directories are. What I need is something that will seaarch an entire network drive for, say, *.dwg, and tell me how much space they all take. The search function of Win2K will tell me that I have 57,637 drawing files, but it will not tell me how much space they all take. I can ask for properties of the whole group of files, but it would probably take the server an hour to poll that many files for properties, so I was hoping that there was something faster.

Perfect, thanks. Sometimes I actually miss DOS.

Do a find, Start > Search > for Files of
Folders or whatever 3rd party search tool you like. Find *.dwg. Select all the
files found. Right click on the selection. Hit Properties. That should give you
the total.

for 60,000 files - sure, but not before lunch
time.  The DOS option worked out great however.

I actually feel sorry for those young whippersnappers who've
never had to tweak a .bat file just to get autocad to work, or play with
loadhigh, or use fdisk. <g>

Most everything is still there. I use a 3rd party
version of WindowsExplorer (PowerDesk) that allows you to have a DOS Command
line open in part of the Explorer window.

What frosts me is the inability to make a dos boot disk in W2k

Why not? You can do your search in the background and will be a lot faster than DOS. Are you not familiar with the multi-tasking capability of your Windows OS?.........:-)

It's still possible. In Windows Explorer, right hand mouse button on the
floppy drive and select format disk. In the format disk dialog, select
create MS-DOS boot disk. There is probably a quick way to do in DOS with a
couple of switches.

I don't know why not, but I tried it.  This is
no slouch of a server, and the data is on a reasonably powerful SAN unit  -
but asking for the properties of that many files, spread among that many
thousands of directories takes a while, it just does.  Experience shows
that the DOS command approach is much, much faster.

Charles.

Showsize will tell you the size of all your
directories and will also give you a break down of file types, the number and
total memory used. I was looking for the same thing as you and it worked
perfectly. Unfortunately I dont have it any more. My company is too cheap to
even buy me a new mouse so d'you think they'd buy the software !! I don't know
how it would handle that many files though. We have a lot less than
that.

Hi. Try Treesize Pro. http://www.jam-software.com/de/treesize.shtml
Should be able to get an eval there. Cheap, easy, quick. You can do what
you indicated by going into Tools-Options-Scan and adding *.dwg to the
filter.
Hope it works ok for you.

Hi C!

In my quest for Windows Utilities, especially Directory & File Listers,
I have discovered two utilities to run reports by file type on network
drives, for space utilization information. Very handy indeed to see how
space DWGs actually take up on your server!! Here's the info--

> Space Searcher - Disk usage analysis tool for Windows Me/9x/2000/NT;
http://www.filesuniverse.com/ (Nice GUI and cool graphic charts!!) Also,
check out their file manager-- frigate;
http://www.frigate3.com/index.php (Nice sync files and Sizer Tools).

> ShowSize 3.2.5 - Fast, flexible disk space reporting tool;
http://kanadepro.com/showsize/ (Nice report listing by file types!)

One other Lister Utility I'm testing and considering is-- PrintFolder
Pro; http://no-nonsense-software.com/printfolder/ (Nice listing of just
directories!) Yet, I'm still in the quest for a "graphic view" of a
folder tree via levels, just like you would see in Windows Explore, but
to select level desired and print the graphic to an image or to html!! I
can get a "tree" mode with the windows 2000 cmd tree routine, yet it
just a "line" tree graphic, and I want "folders"! Any one have a
solution?

Also, a freeware utility I use for calculate main directories on the
server-- Directory Lister;
http://strony.wp.pl/wp/skorczyl/freewarez/index_en.html (Nice HTML
report tool and print!)

I also suggest visiting Karen's Power Tools-- http://www.karenware.com
...nice cool utility tools free online! Karen too has a directory lister
that's nice, yet I still looking for the graphical one!

Anyone have other cool windows utilities?

Ciao!
~Terry
