Upgrading to 2008-licensing restrictions

I am trying to find out the rules for upgrading non-subscription network and stand-alone licenses of 2005 to 2008. After we made the purchase my vendor told me we hade120 days to install the upgrade and remove 2005. He said the clock stareted ticking when they registered our software. I was a bit put off. We hadn't planned to install until after the new year, nor had I asked them to register anything for us.

(1) What are the rules for this type of upgrade?
(2) Does AutoCAD require the vendors to do this registration, or is that the customer's responsibility when they perform the install?

I kind of feel blind-sided by all of this.

Since finding out, I've tried to find any this info on the Autodesk site and through Google with no luck. How would a person know this information if it's not readily available through the Autodesk website or the vendor?

I find issue with one particular statement that you made - that no
extensions are being provided for current apps. That is 110% totally
incorrect - the ONLY way to get the Intellisolve and TDS Survey Link
"extensions" for Civil 3D is to be a subscription customer.

Whether it answers the question or not, subscription *is* the best choice
for users, for the reasons that James and others pointed out.

Sorry, I did not understand that you had read that section of the EULA from
the original post. There were several other replies that suggest others
have not read it either, so I posted it for all. As you and Tom Smith both
state, I would have to agree that the clock starts when you complete the
installation of the new software. Technically, Autodesk may think it starts
at the purchase date but there is nothing enforceable until you complete the
activation after installation.

Happy New Year.

Thank you Jason -- I had completely missed those and appreciate the update. They are not available for my vertical app, and not visible via my personal pointa login. Corporate doesn't enable downloading, so I can't see the c3d extensions that are available.

and I agree that subscription may be a good choice (to date I find it personally advantageous) but that is dependent on numerous factors. Some may find their situation better served by banking the subscription fees, and purchasing upgrades when there is a clear benefit to them. Others may find it advantageous to pre purchase upgrades via subscription. and as always, YMMV
