Updates to Autodesk Discussion Groups

On June 4, Autodesk is upgrading the technology behind our discussion groups. The result is a significant improvement to posting & replying, navigation, search and other features. While we launch this upgrade, the discussion groups will be unavailable from 3pm (PDT) Thursday, June 3 and Friday June 4.

As part of the upgrade, Autodesk has taken the decision to discontinue the time-honored use of the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP). This was a difficult and bittersweet decision, given the company’s past investments to maintain NNTP, but one necessary to continue providing the state-of-art web experience Autodesk customers have come to expect. For active NNTP users, we know this will change your workflow when using the forums. To help transition to the web-based forums, the new updates include a simpler, more intuitive interface to post and reply, bookmarking and e-mail notification features to track favorite posts, and more powerful search tools. While not a substitute for the NNTP experience, the streamlined capabilities of our RSS feeds also provide an enhanced and alternative offline forum reading experience.

Autodesk is excited about this change, and is confident that all the valued users of our discussion groups will quickly appreciate and benefit from the improvements to this web experience.

I hope the web format is updated because now it is slow, cumbersome, and
nearly useless if you want to switch between various forums 😛

just another example of "pretty" outweighing "function"

Eric,

It seems to me that this announcement comes a wee bit late...
Maybe Shaan Hurley was correct in blogging that Autodesk does "not
discuss... future plans" - but since the horses have already bolted, I'm
wondering what's the point of trying to close the barn door now?

At any rate, I'll pass on this so-called discussion group 'upgrade' - if
I've got an AutoCAD question I truly cannot figure out, and AFTER I've
annoyed the Subscription support crew enough about the problem (I'm pretty
sure they won't be liking it...), MAYBE then, I'll check out this
'new-and-improved' 'Coke' - but I'll just sit back and let 'vector2' and
associates like him provide the free peer-to-peer support... (heh)

Still, thanks for providing the NNTP accessible groups for so long. I
do/did appreciate them.
And I really do/did appreciate the help I received here.

Sincerely,
David Kozina

dumb.

The AU website and registration is screwed up every year. Why mess up a
good thing?

Some users of newsreaders, especially those who post frequently in the Revit Architecture NG, were enjoying a feature in their newsreaders that allowed them to filter Vector2 out. Those of us who use the web version, are not so lucky to have such a useful feature. I wonder what is going to happen in June about this issue? New design, new interface, new newsgroup, but same Vector2 shit every day !!??

Passwords and Logins are a coming I bet...so Autodesk will be able to
revoke your access at any time.

why not leave the newsgroups *and* employ the new webside?

if its a problem, don't bother to link them, let it run separately,

if the newer is so much better, everyone will eventually leave the ngs anyhow, and the last person out can turn off the lights.

Just curious - are the upgrades being done in-house or has this been contracted out? Contractors don't necessarily know the requirements such as the ability to cleanly post code which comes with all sorts of special characters, so spell it out and keep at it till they git-r-done! If its in house they should know better.

I've been muddling through the web side since the beginning so the loss of NNTP won't be a factor. That being said, I sincerely hope this upgrade is far better than the last one (get some more moderation in here while you're at it).

If a change riled me up to the point of going elsewhere, well... thats a sign to turn off the computer for a couple of months. Its only a discussion group, and a free one at that.

Because Autodesk does what Microsoft does. MS is apparently
shutting down their NNTP as well. Monkey see, monkey do.

They have that now if you access through the web-based interface.

and access thru the nntp is "instantaneous".

which is why any web-based will be inferior, imo.

huh?

I believe you mean http has been getting worse. No problems with nntp
and it still outperforms the clunky web interface.

This really sucks.....sorry I couldn't come up with a more eloquent analysis
of this "upgrade".

I do nominate Eric for the corporate BS'er of the year award though, for his
explanation of the big favor ADSK is doing to us.

this is so wrong on so many levels...Autodesk will lose thousands of users
if they do this....
