text style standard: ?

I currently set up two font types for my office, Times New Roman and Arial.

1. Times New Roman for title Block, Drawing Notes like: First Floor Plan.
2. Everything else use Arial.

Any comments for this?

I use 4 shx files shadow, simplex, ldot, and helv. The below link shows
their usage. The table font/style has been discontinued. (civil work)

I prefer exactly the opposite. Arial is a sans serif font designed
specifically for titles, and Times is a serif font designed specifically for
body text. I also use lower case for body text because serif lower case is
the fastest and easiest font to read, and there is no longer a speed of
drafting argument for the much harder to read all caps.

Best,
Gordon

I work for a MEP firm, our biggest headaches come from architects who use
non-standard fonts. Everyone has Times New Roman and Ariel, I think your on
the right track. Our office uses Romans as a standard.

Yes, we use Romans

This isn't a new issue. Anyone should know that if they use a nostandard
font, they need to send the font file with the drawing to any outside
consultant.

Up until Acad began to support Windows fonts, everyone had to either a) use
a custom shx font, or b) settle for what came with Acad. Many, if not most,
architects went with a) because they cared about controlling the appearance
of their drawings. And they quickly figured out that they needed to ALWAYS
send all associated support files along with their drawings.

We don't use Windows fonts at all, because up until the current version they
caused God-awful performance problems, and I'm not 100% convinced this has
entirely gone away. After the debacle of Postscript fonts, I'm keeping to
the policy of letting a new feature ride for several releases, to see how it
pans out, before I build any office standards around it. I wasted time in
three consecutive versions because of jumping on the Postscript bandwagon
prematurely.

We continue using the same hand-lettering style custom SHX font that we have
used for years, because we do stock house plans, and it's important to us
that all of our plans are consistent in appearance. If we went with a
Windows font, we still wouldn't put a high priority (if any at all) on being
limited to the most commonly used fonts. We'd pick a font based on our
appearance preferences, with the understanding that it always needs to be
sent along with the drawing, just the same as things have always worked.

I know it's standard but we still come across it. I have to track down fonts
a few times a month, our font directory is pretty full but there is always
an archi out there who wants to make there drawings stand out.

Have a good weekend,
Matt

Matt, to avoid cluttering up your font folder, put the oddball ones in the
project folder they belong to. That way, Acad will still find them (since
the drawing's folder is always on the search path), and when the job is done
and you archive it away, the fonts will go with it.

Just note that True Type fonts (Times & Arial) have been known to degrade
the performance of AutoDesk products. This is why many of us stick with the
shx fonts (RomanS, D, & T).

SHX files are the fonts files that are supplied with AutoCAD.

A thickened Arch style font for bold stuff
and a simple Arch font for normal stuff

Moving to

Becarful with TTFs. They no longer have performance issues in viewing and
regens, but if you have lots of text the file size can double.

yeah. I personally hate the stylized fonts. we've been using them since long
before I got here, about a year ago a couple people started wanting to use
the RomanS font. Now we're moving towards that direction.

I must be the oddball old school goof, because I have our standards set at
using the Leroy standards from LDT.
L60, L80, L100, L120 and so on. Leroy styles use a simplex font.
We just finished up a pretty complex Subdivision and had all the signitures
on the original mylar for recording at the County Courthouse and we had a
change in verbage. Easier to use erase w/ spit and leroy the change than to
replot and have to go get all the signitures again. Although spending a 1/2
hour cleanining out a 00 pen was a pain. That reminds me, I should fix the
digital copy to match. (yacks, the only downfall of handdrafting fixes).
