Subscription and extensions

One of the hooks to make us all become subscription members was the offer of free extensions to our AutoDESK products. I have downloaded and used the Land Desktop VA editor and the CAD standards monitor, but only gave the rest of the extensions a cursory glance. Then the Design Publishing Extension became available, and after reading the blurb, it seemed ideal to produce the volume of drawings I have had to publish recently.

Alas, since Land Desktop does not allow me to have multi-drawing compatibility, (The SDI value is set to 3, and cannot be changed) I cannot use what would have been an invaluable tool.

Does anyone else have problems with the extensions, promising more than they achieve?

P.S. We became subscription members for other reasons outwith the offer of a few free symbols and the extensions.

I agree that the new Digital Publishing Extension
has a few bugs and large holes in it but I imagine that this was released early
due to the push for the new DWF format and because of AU.  I know as a
developer that the toolkit for us to use isn't even out and won't be for some
time.  The multipage DWF has been needed for a long time to say the
least.

Basically I look at the extensions as
being prereleases of new features.  So it will probably be improved by
the time the next release of AutoCAD comes out.

If you need to publish a bunch of drawings check
out my AcroPlot program from:
href="http://www.cadzation.com">www.cadzation.com

It batch processes multiple drawings into a single
PDF file with the bookmarks and everything.  If you like what it does for
the PDF stay tuned and it should be able to create a single dwf from the same
process in no time.  Had the toolkit been available it would be no
problem.  But instead I'll have to create my toolkit for the new
format.

Maybe I am too naive, or ignorant about LDT, but I have used the MAP portion
of LDT, that is, Map that gets installed when LDT is installed, and I
believe it can open multiple drawings.

If you change the menu loaded to the Map menu you can be in Map instead of
LDT. I forget now which menu item is the one, but one of the main menu
headings has an option in its drop down list .....near the bottom of the
least that allows you to change the menu pallet to MAP.

When I installed LDT I also ended up with an LDT icon and a LDT enabled Map
icon, both on my desktop. At this time I only have Map 5.0 installed on
this computer and do not feel much in the mood to install LDT 3 to verify
this, but so far those I know who are using LDT with Map as the primary icon
are able to open multiple drawings.

Indeed, the AEC Enabled Autocad icon is MDI capable. The reason LDT is not is
due to the complexities of tracking multiple drawings within, or across, project
data since file locking is based on session ID and user name, which would be the
same regardless of the number of sessions you can open. Since Autocad proper
only deals with drawings, this is not an issue and therefore MDI is available.

You can open AEC Enabled and LDT at the same time and have access to multiple
drawing in AEC Enabled but only one in LDT.

Thanks, Jack.

I really should know better, I have found quite a few problems, quirks or bugs have sorted themselves out when I switch to Land Enabled Map.

I now have the Design Publishing Extension working perfectly. This is a real god-send, and may emphasise my point about the extensions being used as a "hook" to move every user onto the subscription program. I have a coordination meeting with the CAD Manager of one of our design partners today, and I will certainly be outlining the beneifits of this extension. His company though is not a subscription member, and he will not be able to publish drawings or DWFs with as much ease as I will now.
