Should I install 2008 Project yet

My company mainly used Land Desktop, but we are going to start to train in Civil 3D. We are currently using the 2006 products but need to upgrade. Is the Land Desktop 2008 stable enough for me to upgrade to the 2008 products or should I install the 2007 products and upgrade to 2008 next year?

I've only had it installed for a little while. But between what I've seen
and have read on the newsgroups. 2008 looks stable enough to start using
now. Luckily it seems to follow the odd even rule.

Well Allen, I'm wondering if you have you been reading Heidi's posts
regarding the 2K8 release of both the LDT and CD Companions?

The Terrain Model Surface names have been truncated to around 10 characters.
She was only informed of this after her firm's reseller had checked in with
the Deskers.

So even when you attempt to use the Copy in TME, it's going to produce too
long a name also, since it adds "Copy of " to the olde Surface name?

I just did a Search of the Knowledge Base using "land desktop 2008 surface
name" - w/o quotes of course, and received the olde No results were found
for:

I just did another Knowledge Base Search for "land desktop surface name" -
w/o quotes of course, and received an inkling of how this naming convention
may have been derived. It mentions in the 1st result "(Surface 1 by
default)", so I'm thinking that we might now need to develop a "score card".
So that we can tell the players by their numbers?

I would much prefer to go back to the way it was prior to 2K8's arrival. I'm
not out to see just how long I can make a Surface name, but only 10
characters? I can make EG, FG and Excav do for most of my Surfaces, but when
you get into making revisions, for whatever reason, my preference is to then
add a date in YYYYMMDD format. So I can tell when things got changed.

And from what she's been writing about with the Civil Design Companion
Profiles menu, that part of the accouterments of LDT seems like they'll be
waiting on the Service Pack to arrive?

Glad you posted Don. I hadn't run in to that snag yet. But mostly this seems
to be a fairly stable release. At least compared to some others. SP1 will
address some of the issues and create others I sure.

IMO, 2008 is better with all of it's issues than 06 or 07 ever was.

We have had no major issues with LDT or C3D to date.

Hi Don -
I checked out the surface names in TME in my 2008 copy and there were no issues with naming/# of characters. Everything came in from older projects just fine.
