Preliminary Design file management

How do you all manage your cad and other design files before you get to the CD phase?
I'm having to organize.. and I have mutiple files named SITE or FP 1 or PRELIM 1 ...stuff like that..
any sugestions would be great.
also.. what gets saved in the end? is there a "clean up" time wher project managers (or team) go through and clean up the project directory?
its amazing how fast hard drives run out of room!

thanks
miguel

Miguel,

We use version numbers to denote key points before CD's based on AIA
naming.

sheet files;
A101-ver1_projectname.dwg
etc.
model files;
AFP1-ver1_projectname.dwg

Correspondence is basically;

receipient-subject-type-date

work stuff is saved to temp folder;

z-username....

dumped at project close-out

We use a directory called "Design Development"
with the file labeled "job number_area_scheme#_date" Example
"22041_Site_Scheme#2_02-12-2003"
