There's a product called Viewcompanion that can batch convert PLTs to PDFs:

http://www.softwarecompanions.com/viewcomp.html

I think Oce Client Tools (free download) will do it. Although I do like
ViewCompanion alot and think it's worth the ~$40...

Oce client tools will do it, but you are limited to 11x17
output. Any PLT file viewer that allows you to print gives
you the same capabilities also. Here are a few more:

just drag the .plt file(s) into it or associate .plt with acrodist.exe and dbl-click on the .plt
file.

there are some settings you can adjust (dpi, etc) if the default doesn't suit you, but once it is
set , you are good to go.

Then what? Why not have them convert it to pdf? It'd only be hunderds of
$$ instead of the $40 he'd spend on ViewCompanion.

I've tried your method running Adobe Acrobat 7.0.7 Distiller Professional
Version.
But no can do. This is the error log notice I receive:

%%[ Warning: Empty job. No PDF file produced. ] %%

You try the attached PLT which Viecompanion had no problems viewing and
converting to PDF.
Let me know what's the trick to get acrodist.exe to work.

i have converted plt files for KyoceraMita 4850, HPdesignjet 4000 HPGL2/RTL, and Canon iR c3220
PCL5c

The HP is definately HPGL2, but i think the Kyocera and Canin use a proprietary format.

They *do* all use hdi system drivers when plotting with autocad.

i could not convert the attached .plt file. What device was that plotted for ?

Hi DougK,

So that's the difference. Acrobat Distiller worked on your PLTs because you
used the HDI drivers which came with AutoCAD.
The PLT file I attached uses a RTL Windows Print driver by HP for the HP1055
Color plotters.

yeah, i was suspecting that was probably it.

i would think that any HPGL/HPGL2 would work too.

can you use the hdi system printer for your HP? i've never had any problem with them (maybe just
lucky).

No. HP stopped writing drivers specifically for AutoCAD a number of years
ago. So all the HP HDI drivers are old and much slower than the HP Windows
drivers.
So there are no HDI drivers for the HP1055 nor the latest HPT1100 models.
This is also true with the latest Xerox 6204 plotters.

One can do what ever conversions desired /;-) ...We just use Apprentice
Remote with digital stamps to create VICs, and then our repro guy
converts to TIFs so we can send to the Bidding GC's reprographer. Then
the conversion becomes a reimbursable paid by the Client /;-) ...The
conversion for the TIFs, I think is only about $2 per sheet, so for a
typical job of 50 sheets, just a $100.

There's the catch - "the conversion becomes a reimbursable paid by the
Client". I know all costs are ultimately paid by the client, but we would
pay for the VC license, have an intern spend a half hour on the conversion
for about half that and not have to buy the license again. It may be a size
thing - I know when you get large having the contact point for managing
specific needs is cost effective even if it's more expensive than the sought
out solution.

Indeed I somewhat agree with you... But you do pay the Intern a billing
rate of say $80 per hour, so I suppose you could do the conversion in
house and bill it to the job /;-)

Personally though, I like the ability to put digital stamps across the
sheet. Keep the bid sets totally separate from the permit sets /;-)
