My first CAD test: Was I too tough?

all,

I've never given any prospective employee a "CAD Test," but I was asked to do so
today. I quickly came up with 20 questions which I figured any knowledgable
person who knows the program would be able to hit it out the park.

Instead, I got a serious case of deer-in-the-headlights-itis.

I didn't want to make it version specific, but I understand some questions would
not be answerable for someone running an older release, and gave the person a
pass in those cases.

I also didn't care if the questions were "useful" on a day to day basis; the
idea was to get an idea of how well the user knows AutoCAD.

So, I'll ask you guys: Was this a decent CAD questionnaire?

1. What are the names of the first 7 AutoCAD ACI colors?
1 =
2 =
3 =
4 =
5 =
6 =
7 =

2. What are System Variables? How are they used?

3. When dimensioning in Model space, what DIMSCALE value would you use for
dimensioning for a 3/16"=1'-0" plot?

4. When working with External References (Xrefs) what is the difference between
Overlay and Attach?

5. How would you specify a Viewport scale of 1/4"=1'-0" in a Paper Space
Viewport, using the Command Line?

6. What is a CUI file?

7. What is a fast method for selecting MText objects with a Style of "MEDIUM"?

8. What does the FROM osnap do?

9. What does Zoom Dynamic do?

10. What are the special rules concerning layers and colors in Blocks?

11. If you dimension two parallel walls and get a dimension of 14'-5 13/256",
what do you do?

12. What is one way of dimensioning something along an angle?

13. Explain the difference between the DIVIDE and MEASURE commands.

14. What does PSLTSCALE do?

15. What is an easy way to open an Xref from a parent file?

16. What is an easy way to close a Polyline?

17. What support file do you modify to create custom command aliases?

18. What is the command-line sequence you would use to change all Xref layer
colors to color #8 (gray)?

19. What does BATTMAN do?

20. What command do you use to change your default Plotter?

Extra Credit / Trick Questions:

1. During the MOVE command, what happens if you hit in response to the
"Specify second point or :" prompt?

2. What generally happens when you do a PERPendicular Osnap on a Spline curve?

I had some more trick questions, but since the first 20 didn't go so well, we
just called it a day at that point 😞

Our policy is that blocks are for simple things, which belong on a single layer.
When they do require multiple layers (= lineweights), such as a window w/muntins
in elevation, it's easy enough to create multiple block with the same IP, each
one inserted at the same IP using the INSERT osnap, and placed on the
approproate layer and perhaps Grouped together for ease o editing.

Okay, but if your layering convention follows something logical, e.g. all
annotation is put on an ANNO layer, then the use of wildcards for layer
control
is extremely effective.

I used to change xref layer's colors in this manner(-la c 8 *|*) but found that it caused
very bad side effects: Since the visibility of a layer is controlled by whether it's
color is positive or negative, it turns on all the xref layers. Today I use a custom
program to overcome that limitation but by using the layer manager, there are no such bad
side effects if you change the colors (because it retains the color signs).

Yep, but I'm also interested in speed, which means to me a profound
understanding of the command line. I don't think you can know AutoCAD
without
understanding command line syntax.

'-la c 8 *|* "" ' is imminently faster than opening any dialog box -
particularly the layer dialog.
Now that I "see" it, it makes perfect sense.

But it was just hovering on the edge of my "dirt-dauber" mind until now. ;0)

I started reading this thread at roughly 4:55 PM MST here in AZ.

Most often we wouldn't be changing all Layers colors in a particular XREF in
this manner. Sometimes we want a certain Layer to be less "Screened" than
the others in that XREF. Some need to stand out more than others.

At least in my mind. ;0)

It's important because so much depends on closed polylines, and I had a rash

That is a side effect, true; but only for On/Off. It might make sense to
re-examine the use of Layer On and Off, instead using Freeze/Thaw.

Of course you know the difference: Where Freeze removes the objects from the
Display List, Off does not, which means turning it on imposes no regen time. But
Freeze is overall more efficient because regens are about instantaneous nowadays
and AutoCAD doesn't ever have to deal with the vectors when frozen.

Thus, I teach my users to use On/Off when you temporarily want to get rid of a
layer (or, more often, to isolate a layer for editing, turning all others off)
and use Freeze/Thaw to control overall visibility on a more or less permanent
basis based on the drawing requirements.

However, look at the context of this particular command example: you usually
make global sweeping changes to layer visibility at one time, to set the layer
status for your working or sheet file. In this context, having things turn on
isn't that much of a goober problem, particularly if you use Freeze/Thaw.

But again - it's not the PARTICULAR command that is in question; it's simply a
matter of testing whether the candidate knows there's the command line and that
it can be used to do neat stuff really fast. I do not care one whit whether the
user thinks this usage is a good idea.

It all depends on what you're objectives are. If you want the block to
maintain the properties of the layers in the block or the layer of insertion
if the block is created on layer 0. Then BYLayer is fine. If you want to
change the properties BYBlock. Then use that.

One example is with LDT you get a lot of plant symbols. For some reason the
linework in those symbols is created on layer 0 but given individual colors.
Of course those colors don't work with my CTB. I can edit the block and
change all of the colors to BYLayer. So they will assume the color of the
layer they are in. But some of the blocks have simple linework -some have
complex. So I want to have the simple ones a color that will plot with a
heavier lineweight than the complex.

Now I know that many will say that doing this violates the "EVERYTHING
BYLAYER" rule and it does. But I don't want to have a Planting-Heavy,
Planting-Medium and Planting-Light layer. I just want a Planting layer. So I
make all the linework BYBlock. So I can change the color of all the lines by
changing the color of the block. I probably shouldn't have said I prefer
BYBlock. I should have said I prefer it in some cases.

In question #2 of are you just looking for the line and arc to be drawn
correctly or are you looking to see if the applicant knows how to
automatically draw a tangent arc or line without using any of the LDT

hey, do you like off topic newsgroups with the smartest ACAD peeps ever?

We keep forgetting to mention that parallel cannot be used to pick the first
point of a line...only the second.

Does that help?

I agree with simple. This was more of a problem back when regens were a
real pain with R9 on a 286.

Our policy is that blocks are for simple things, which belong on a single
layer.
When they do require multiple layers (= lineweights), such as a window
w/muntins
in elevation, it's easy enough to create multiple block with the same IP,
each
one inserted at the same IP using the INSERT osnap, and placed on the
approproate layer and perhaps Grouped together for ease o editing.

As with any test you are looking to find out if a person has real world
experience and what he know about the program, not to see if he/she is an
expert. Tests are usually designed so that not all questions are going to
be answered. I have a binder I found on the net that is a couple of inches
thick and about 40 lessons that was from a course test. I would hate to
think that any of us would have to have a 95% correctness on this to get
employed but it does show just how much a person is willing to learn on
their own after hours by just reading. As with any test it also has to be
discipline specific as I don't know surveying methods as you may not know
structural ones, etc.

hey, here is the test I have used for years now. It has a lot of the same
type of questions.
I don't care if people have this before the interview, because I ask them to
elaborate on a few items.
man, I wish people would study this before an interview as it would double
most interviewee's acad knowledge.

I would say Matt's test is very hard. Anyone not very experienced would
miss a lot of questions.
I say that because it covers a large cross seciton of issues. It takes a
while to c
over all that and know it by heart.
I like hard tests though, they show managers that real work is hard.

I was checking to see if the user could draw the lines any way they wanted.
Also, to see if they knew what "tangent" meant.
If its a person claiming to be experienced, I watch their keyboard and mouse habits, that gives it away in about 10
seconds.
I never just test though, I talk to the person about various things. You don't want to miss talent.
You also don't want to come up with an opinion totally different than the managers as they are usually good in their
assesment of general skills. Talking is necessary.
