Is there any recourse..?

I get a ton of spam from people harvesting my email address from ADSK NG's -
even though I modify them against this sort of thing.

Is there any place to/any point in reporting companies who have harvested
addresses for SPAM purposes?

That's interesting. I get tons of SPAM but not that I could honestly say
was because someone "harvested" my e-mail from the NG.(unless your AutoCAD
help shows something for "viagra")

It's so discouraging to come in on a Monday morning and have your mailbox
filled with messages implying that a part of your anatomy is too small and
needs to be enlarged.......to paraphrase Bill Shakespeare..."First, we kill
all the spammers..."
;)

I had though of starting a company to deal with this. You pay me a monthly
fee of $10. Every time you get a spam, you forward it to me (maybe we
automate this). I employ a good hacker, who hacks the real sender. Once we
get 100 hits on the same sender, we send then a nasty letter. Once we get
1000 hits on the same sender, I send my other employee, Guido the Thug, to
'deal' with it. I pay Guido $5 out of the $10, the hacker $3, $1 is for
overhead and I keep $1. Seems viable 😉

Best,
Gordon

I know I can get rid of 'em with rules or anti-spam software, but I'm more
interested in seeing 'the mother company' go after some people who violate
the terms of use.

If you use Outlook here is an option that works quite well and it keeps
learning. Prior to installation I would get 300 spam message a week in my
inbox, after installation I might get 2 a week. It takes about 10 minutes
to set up and continues to learn as time goes by. I got the link from
InfoWorld magazine and it has made my life much easier.

www.starship.python.net/crew/mhammond/spambayes

If I ember correctly the link wasn't quite right but if you back up to the
root of the site it is easy to find. to program called Spambayes.

The newest Mozilla has a junk mail control built in. It will learn what is junkmail
and what is not.

Are you sure it's from these groups. I've participated for years with an
open email address and get very little SPAM. What I do get I can blame on
the few other sites I've given my address at.

I'm pretty sure, not 100% certain. I feel pretty sure because for any
random web site I visit, I'll use a junk mail address as follows:

@ my personal domain

............when the spam arrives, I can tell where it's from. (not that it
does any good when its coming from Trinidad)

Only for NG's do I use a truncated version of my office email - and ADSK are
the only ones I use. I get very little spam on my personal domain inbox,
tons on my work address...

So... who really knows. I do wish that outlook would display the attachment
size on the inbox, something that OE can do - a tip from www.blackviper.com
that I found to be quite useful in identifying viruses.

I thought that they might be harvesting your address off your web site. But
your not listed on the contact page. Though that might not mean anything.

Are you behind a Firewall. If not this info could be harvested right off
your computer or your companies server. If you don't have a firewall do a
Google search for a program called Spybot. It's free. This will not only
find and delete spyware (data harvesting programs) from your computer but by
getting rid of these programs it will fee up system resources and improve
your performance.

I'm behind a good firewall and it still found about a half a dozen on my
computer. I've heard of unprotected computers having 50+.

Luck

Allen,

You might be on to something - our OLD website had contacts for all staff,
now it's just the principals .

As for firewalls, I'm told its "not my concern" - but I'm in a branch office
with nothing but the cable modem router acting as a firewall... since it's
not my concern... I don't bother running ZoneAlarm (like I do at home).
I've had my hand slapped enough times for meddling in the IT stuff, so I
"punted" long ago

Thx
