If you use your imagination it's not too hard to do a peripheral check on
somebody without going through the hassles of a formal background check.
Court records and processed law enforcement information is publicly
available in most areas. I'm not sure how legal it would be but it's not
hard.

Unfortunately in my office our discipline leads ask all the questions and then tell me when we have a new hire. It isn't until the person is actually hired that I get to see whether or not he/she actually knows CAD.

If I ran interviews in an environmental-civil design firm I would ask:

How long have you been working in AutoCAD?
With what version of AutoCAD are you most familiar?
How much experience do you have in the environmental-civil discipline?
What other CAD programs do you know and how proficient are you with them?

Luckily in our office, as CAD Manager, I take part in our interview process.
First, I screen resumes for potential skilled Designer/Draftsmen. Then our
actual interview is two parts, an AutoCAD test given by me and a verbal
interview given by our Engineering VP. My test is a written description of a
simple retaining wall detail that the person must draw in AutoCAD. I stand
behind and observe. We've really been able to screen out the "talkers" from
the "walkers".

My interview Question:

If you are in a car travelling at the speed of light, and you turn on the headlights, does anything happen?

At the speed of light time slows to a stop, you can't flip the switch.

Personally I feel a CAD test is more important, yes you need to ask questions but if the person cant draw…

I was told this true story a little while ago by a CAD Consultant.

A Technician was given a lengthy verbal interview & was hired to do some drawings. After he'd been in a company for a few weeks the project he was working on was falling behind & there were issues with the buildability of his drawings on site. The CAD consultant, who happened to be in the office on another matter, was asked to talk to the Technician in order to find out why he was behind & to report what assistance was required to rectify the situation...

The consultant came back & explained the Technician was a chef!!! He had been waiting to be caught out & couldn't believe it had taken as long as it had. He realised very quickly he was way out of his depth, but the money was good so he decided to stick it out for as long as he could.

When asked why he’d done it, apparently he'd hated working in a kitchen so thought a change was in order. He’d been told Technicians earn good money by a friend who was one, so figured he’d give it a go. He’d had a weekend crash course in AutoCAD from his friend & borrowed his interview drawings!

If you don't test their skills you know nothing about their true abilities.

3. How do you feel when you are interrupted to change gears and work on something completely different?.........Can you provide an example?
4. If you have to get something done, and have a question, but no one is here, what would you do?..........Can you provide an example?

These are some good general questions! As an interviewer, what kinds of responses are or what content in the response are you looking for in order to see that the applicant is qualified/intelligent/someone good to work with?

Can't find what you're looking for? Ask the community or share your knowledge.
