Internet use

I was just curious on how other firms regulate the internet use. I've always thought of the internet as a valuable resource in solving some problems but I know that others take advantage of this resource. I don't mind our users occasionally checking their personal bank accounts, ect. but I don't what to leave the "door open" so to speak on internet use.

I agree with regulated internet at work. Some don't. If you need to
do this, I haven't found a better program than Trend Micro Interscan Web
Security Suite.

Pretty simple here:

No pr0n
No streaming radio
No P2P file sharing applications

Usage is sneakily monitored on a case by case basis if something that violates
these rules is suspected.

We can also get reports from the ISP on our traffic usage. This can come in
handy when you hire a new guy and see your traffic increase almost tenfold
(DAMHIKT).

Thanks,

Trend Micro looks like it has the stuff that I was looking for, mostly the URL filter. Thank you.

We have a program called "Surf Control" that controls internet access by
group or user. The "nasty" stuff of course is denied to all. Some people
have more "access" than others depending on need, trust and performance.

Mate that with a Cisco PIX firewall and you've got some very good
protection going on.

You are looking for Four main parts:

1) Desktop / Server Antivirus software (McAfee, Tend, or Norton)
2) Firewall to keep the hackers and viruses out.
3) E-mail gateway to strip attachments if you so desire and filter bqased on
keywords
4) Surf contol or logger atleast to monitor web traffic by user / sit
address / site type (You can downlaod a list of webs ite and their
classification)

Does Windows Server 2003 provide the internet logging and monitoring tools,
or do we need to buy a 3rd party app?

Here, access to inappropriate sites is blocked.
And users have a daily quota of 5Mb they can go almost anywhere 'till there quota is used up. Some have a higher quota, but they have to be able to justify it.
We use Kerio for firewall & email.

So if one of your users need to download an update, or a large ZIP file from
a vendor, etc.....they are SOL ?

5Mb gets used up in maybe a couple of pages with nowadays websites and
intrusive stuff hat gets added to the code.

Hey Hector;

Maybe they employ a Special PC for that type of need?

Currently we allow any type of usage. Company policy discourages personal
use except on the employees lunch break, but we all know that employees do
whatever they want when they aren't being watched. We do not have any
monitoring software but I plan to set some up soon.

Use of the internet for work related activities is allowed and unrestricted.

Right now we have ~25 employees and Verizon business DSL 3M/768K and don't
have any speed issues. At least 5 employees stream music.

I do make periodic checks for file sharing software manually.
