Install problems with AutoCAD 2008

I am having problems installing AutoCAD 2008 and AutoCAD Architecture 2008.

When running the setup.exe I get an error box saying

The handle is invalid.
Failed to copy the following files: *.exe.

I can run the acad.msi to install but when I use Add or Remove Programs to uninstall I come back to the same problem.

Has anyone else come across this? It's very frustrating. The only thing I can think of is that for some reason we're running 32bit windows on 64bit machines, but even then I've read there shouldn't be any problems.

Everything seems to run fine on the other machines in my office so is there something I can turn on or off?

Many thanks

David

That not the problem - all machines built after 2006 are 64-bit capable.

The problem is that the MSIEXEC process that is used to install ACD-A is
EXTREMELY flaky and susceptible to installation brownouts for no damn good
reason.

When you install ACD-A, run through this preflight checklist:

1. Disable all Anti-Virus software.

2. Delete the entire contents of the %TEMP% folder for the account used to
install it

3. Defragment the hard disk

4. I also make sure all Autodesk stuff is removed and scrubbed clean from a PC
with extreme prejudice. Check Add/Remove to make sure there's nothing left. Run
regedit.exe and delete the Software\Autodesk keys from HKCU and HKLM, and delete
the \Program Files\Autodesk and \Program Files\Common Files\Autodesk folders.

5. If you are installing off of the DVD, stop. Copy the entire contents of the
ACD-A DVD to a hard disk, and run the Installation Wizard from that location.

6. If you are not creating Deployments to install ACD-A, stop. Use the
Installation Wizard > Deployment Wizard to create a Deployment which will
install ACD-A to any system in a hands-off mode with all of the setting correct.

I've had problems with the windows installer service that required me to
uninstall any windows updates related to the installer, then go get the
distributable update pacakages from MS. Once those were installed,
everything worked out.
