how do you civil guys handle utilities

......that were located prior to completing a set of construction plans? Is there a generic note that you put on plans to inform the contractor that these are only approximate and should be located prior to digging? I thought there might be some sort of a legal note ya'll might use. ANy infomation will be greatly appreciated. Mike

We are required to place a "call utility notification" block on your drawings. This states that the contractor is to call the Utility Notification Center of Colorado 2 business days prior to digging. Utility locates have further jargon stating that utilities are approximate. We have a similar note for Texas. We also add our own note that basically says that 'all utilities are shown based upon the latest information available at the time of work and should be considered approximate. The contractor is responsible for finding the exact location of all utilities prior to work and is responsible for any damages to said utilities'. -- John Michalik Drafting and Design LDD/CAD Development & Standards johnm@weissereng.com "B Jordan" wrote in message news:40a53e2c_1@newsprd01... > We are required to place a "call utility notification" block on your > drawings. > This states that the contractor is to call the Utility Notification Center > of Colorado 2 business days prior to digging. > > Utility locates have further jargon stating that utilities are approximate. > > Bruce > > "mkh" wrote in message > news:40a53121_1@newsprd01... > > .....that were located prior to completing a set of construction plans? I just looked in our general notes and it states: "The contractor is specifically cautioned that the location and/or elevation of existing utilities..." "...the information is not to be relied upon as being exact or complete..." Bruce "John Michalik" wrote in message news:40a53f7b$1_2@newsprd01... > We have a similar note for Texas. Hi, We (New Mexico) use a note on the plans: 'Location of underground utilities and easements not verified by this plan. Underground utilities may exist where none are shown. Underground utility location is based upon information provided by others and may be incomplete or obsolete at the time of construction. The owner should inform himself of the location of any utility line, pipeline, or underground and is fully responsible for any and all damage caused by its failure to locate, identify and preserve any and all existing utilities, pipelines and underground utility lines. The owner is urged to comply with state statutes, municipal and local ordinances, rules and regulations, if any, pertaining to the location of these lines, in planning and conducting excavation. The owner should make themselves aware of regulations stated in chapter 62, article 14, NMSA 1978 relating to excavation damage to pipelines and underground utility lines.' sc

Here in NH we rely on Dig-Safe. At my store a note goes right in the general notes "Call Dig-Safe at least 72 hours prior to commencing the work. Do not commence the work until Dig Safe has completed marking the Utility locations." Another note states: "No warranty is expressed or intended concerning the existence or location of any underground utilities. It is the contractor's responsibility to verify underground conditions by test pits or any means approved by the engineer. Notify the Engineer and the Utility immediately if unexpected conditions are encountered." rs "mkh" wrote in message news:40a53121_1@newsprd01... > .....that were located prior to completing a set of construction plans? Basic note for Tennessee - The Surveyor/Engineer has made no attempt to locate underground utilities, underground foundations, underground encroachments or underground improvements, except as shown hereon. Actual location of all underground utilities should be verified through Tennessee 1 Call (1-800-351-1111) or the utility provider prior to any excavation or construction.

hey all- how about this- when we do a survey for a job we call blue stake (util. staking co.) to mark locations of utils prior to the survey- and we also add athe notes as per above post's - the real kicker here is that the util's don't like to come out and mark the locations- we have to tell them we are going to be digging out holes for survey monumnets just to get them to come out. even then they will some times not do it. we are in az. is this the same for others- ? jjd "Alan Henderson @ A'cad Solutions" wrote in message news:40a6cb5d_3@newsprd01... > Basic note for Tennessee - > > The Surveyor/Engineer has made no attempt to locate underground utilities, > underground foundations, underground encroachments or underground > improvements, except as shown hereon. Same in Connecticut (I don't have the actual verbage on the drawing) Call Before You Dig. http://www.cbyd.com/ -- Tracy W. Same here in NY. We just tell them we have a project starting and leave it to them to assume we mean the construction phase. Here in MI, we have the same problem. We often tell them that we will be doing soil borings, and want the whole site marked because we haven't decided where the borings will go. It works most of the time.... This was for East Tennessee, specifically in the Knoxville area.
