Help files - How does one create them?

In the past I've seen some talk about moving CAD standards to a help file
format (chm?). What's the best way to go about it? I've heard of RoboHelp,
but was wonder what other options are out there that someone has acutally
used.

Thanks!

Paul,

I use RoboHelp is very professional but expensive. I made the cad-standards
and tutorials when I was a cad manager for an arch office.
much easier and basically by connecting to each of the custom-or-standards
commands.

I use Word to create HTML files. it may not be the best way but it's pretty straight forward and it works.
The only problem I found was that Word didn't really support frames but I got around that by editing the HTML file manually.

I have to ask why you would use Dreamweaver as an html editor? DW is much
more for writing javascript and web applications. The best html editor is
notepad and it's already on your system and will save you a few hundred $$$.
It would actually take more time to create html using DW then it would with
notepad.

I have DW too, but rarely use it. It does have it's place though in the
tool box.

For a HELP type system without much flashiness to it. I start out
everything with Mozill (or Netscape) composer, the editor has just the
right number of HTML building functions to handle this type of Job.

I also use a free convertor for the CHM aspect.

Wow, what a string of differences, my personal
option is to use

helpkit for $169.00 and do all of my standards in
microsoft word

from all of the documentation that was already
floating around

and then import the word files into helpkit to
automatically

create the html for me.

HTML I found is the way to go. If in the future (when you are no longer
there) Someone can pick up were you left off. Run it from a network drive
and bam there you go. Interactive and easy to look at.

I use either FrontPage 2002 or Word to create the html file and then compile
into a *chm w\ Visual CHM - available for $20.00 from

http://www.wekasoft.com

works great for my purposes - easier than the Microsofts html help
workshop - looks like from other replys, there are a lot of ways to go
depending on your pocketbook and ambitions.
