Hi Alan,
I've recommended Microns for several clients and they are very happy
with them. To the best of my knowledge, they don't use a proprietary
bios, or anything 'cute' to make them different. All the components are
first line, non-proprietary, and you can have them specifically
configured to your exact needs. Xi are also good but tend to be a bit
more expensive. I was never a fan of Gateway and I don't have an opinion
on Dell. My laptop is a Compaq and it's a little funky with the way it's
set up.
Another option is to find a local hardware supplier and spec out a
system for them to provide. A local hardware support source, spares,
etc. make this a viable way to go. My five year old custom built P200Pro
system is still chugging along and takes off-the-shelf components for
upgrading (HD's, CD-ROM's, etc.).
