Format the cells as Fractions. There are units under type you can use for
eights, sixteenths or whatever.

I believe the best you can do is enter the numbers as decimal and use a
custom number format to display feet-inches. Though I think to do it
correctly you would need to create a custom Excel function.

It can be made to if you use one cell for
feet, another for inches and a little If statement.

Actually I guess you'd need 2 IF
formulas.

If column A was Feet and B inches
(formatted as a fraction) (the two together being the first length)
column C was Feet and D inches (fomatted as a fraction)(those two together being
the second length) then you could have:

A(Feet) B(Inches) C(Feet) D(Inches) E(Total Feet)
F(Total Inches)

Then column E could add the feet (+1 if the
inches totaled more than 12):

=IF(B1+D1<12,A1+C1,A1+C1+1)

and F would add the inches and keep them under 12
(the feet would already have been incremented if the inches were >
12):

=IF(B1+D1<12,B1+D1,B1+D1-12)

I posted an example to customer files, look for Plot Limits Spread Sheet.

By changing the viewable size along the top (blue font) the value will
change for each scale (yellow cell area). This value is given in Feet/Inches
simply select any of these cells to see the formula.

Cell A1:
value in decimal feet

Cell B1:
=ROUND((INT((A1*12)/12)*100+MOD((A1*12),12))*16,0)/16

Format this cell as custom: #0'-00 ??/??"''"

Result in Cell B1:

107'-11 3/16''

Cell A1:
value in decimal inches

Cell B1:
=ROUND((INT((A1)/12)*100+MOD((A1),12))*16,0)/16

Format this cell as custom: #0'-00 ??/??"''"
or if you want to keep inches: #0 ??/??"''"
