Essential software

Besides CAD or Internet/e-mail software, what other software programs have
you found particularly helpful in your day-to-day work?

Here's my list:
WinZip 8.0 - File compression/archive utility.
www.winzip.com

Beyond Compare 2 - Awesome file comparison/synchronization program.
www.scootersoftware.com

TextPad 4.5 - Crém de la crém of text editors.
www.textpad.com

ScopeEdit - Program editing utility using hyperlink-like window editing
features.
Predecesor of Interspector (which I need to take a closer look
at, BTW)
(Anyone out there using Interspector?)
www.popupsolutions.com

Microsoft Streets & Trips - Trip planning software. Just plain handy.

How about NTDMatch by Larry R. Waibel. It is a directory matching
program which allows you to update two directories of the same files by
highlighting the different ones.

An office suite - we use MS Office - I don't know that any of the others are
worse. I've used WordPerfect, and it certainly did some things better
than Word, but since all but a very few of the Architects I've worked with
use even less of Word's capabilities than they do of AutoCAD's, it's a moot
point. Ditto Excel, a spreadsheet is essential, but since most Architects
are not going to bother to master them, the differences between Excel and
Lotus are not applicable. Use whichever your office staff finds easier.

A general purpose file viewer - I use XNView, but ACDSee, which does
essentially the same stuff seems quite popular.

A general raster graphics editor. Photoshop is the clear winner here.
Actually, 90% of what we do is easily done in Photoshop LE, but, of course,
everyone has to have the biggest badest editor around, so we pay three times
as much money for the full version.

A layout program, such as Quark, or InDesign. Not so much, now, because I
do nothing with the marketing department, but every office needs to have
this function somehow.

I find that a good screen capture utility is a godsend - I use Snagit. But,
you could get by with the windows built in screen capture if you had to.

WinZip, of course.

DirPrint Pro - I used this a lot in my old office, when archiving, to record
how the directory structures had been set up.

In addition to your list I'd add CKRename.
http://www.musicsucks.com/CKSoft/index.htm

A really useful for "donorware" for "bulk file renaming". Can use wildcard,
text replace or add auto numbers to alter or totally replace filenames. Esp.
good for the cryptic names most digital cameras use for images or updating
old files to new naming standards.

So far I've resisted Interspector and am sticking with ScopeEdit 1.8. I tried
the Interspector eval briefly way back; it didn't rock my world like SE (which
is less flamboyant and ambitious, but does what I want). I was disappointed to
find ScopeEdit wouldn't be carried forward; perhaps I'll have to write my own
version. Moo ha ha ha.

Oh yeah, Textpad still rocks my world (lol, I'm in the credits), the lean and
mean ascii bashin' machine 🙂

Have to add ACDSee to the list; invaluable.

Cheers David.
