An office suite - we use MS Office - I don't know that any of the others are
worse. I've used WordPerfect, and it certainly did some things better
than Word, but since all but a very few of the Architects I've worked with
use even less of Word's capabilities than they do of AutoCAD's, it's a moot
point. Ditto Excel, a spreadsheet is essential, but since most Architects
are not going to bother to master them, the differences between Excel and
Lotus are not applicable. Use whichever your office staff finds easier.
A general purpose file viewer - I use XNView, but ACDSee, which does
essentially the same stuff seems quite popular.
A general raster graphics editor. Photoshop is the clear winner here.
Actually, 90% of what we do is easily done in Photoshop LE, but, of course,
everyone has to have the biggest badest editor around, so we pay three times
as much money for the full version.
A layout program, such as Quark, or InDesign. Not so much, now, because I
do nothing with the marketing department, but every office needs to have
this function somehow.
I find that a good screen capture utility is a godsend - I use Snagit. But,
you could get by with the windows built in screen capture if you had to.
WinZip, of course.
DirPrint Pro - I used this a lot in my old office, when archiving, to record
how the directory structures had been set up.
