Collaborate a BIM Project

We are collaborating our first BIM project starting later this week. We are a MEP contractor, but for some reason we will be doing all of the collaborating for all of the different disciplines. My question is what information should I ask for from all of the other disciplines? I have coordinated projects in 2D/3D and would usually ask from drawings, layering and text styles, and insertion point. Is there anything else to consider when coordinating a BIM project? As of right know I have requested the items listed above.

Thanks

Project collaboration on a BIM project will be more involved than has been
typically done through the years with CAD and involves different types of
standards than is required by CAD. It is even more important to have
consistency and compatibility between the different team members using BIM
than it was with people using CAD. The AIA has also created Document E202
which addresses collaboration with BIM and is designed to help with sharing
BIM files. It is becoming more common to find this contract document on
projects.

The following link is to a recent article on my blog where I address BIM
standards with the E202 and I list some of the things to consider.

The above link does not entirely answer your question as there is a LOT
involved in being in charge of project collaboration, but hopefully it helps
get things started for you. I do have some other articles on the blog that
discuss the E202.

Keep in mind that BIM is a completely different animal than regular CAD and
it requires different processes than are typical in the CAD world.

I'm sorry if my response sounds like a promo, but I hate to write all of the
same information that I have in the blog. 🙂

what I have seen that actually works, is to tell the civils they must provide 2d linework and 3d solids (not Civil 3D
objects or any custom objects except maybe C3D surfaces), all coordinate correct for project.
The pipe networks of C3D require part libraries which are not worth the trouble, just explode to get solids.

The visualization part of BIM is simple if dealing with dwgs, not sure about ustn. Things like navisworks work well to
assemble multiple dwgs into one 3d view.
The data part may not be so simple because it depends what you want to do with it. Navisworks cannot do
station/elevation calcs from Civil 3d data, or landxml data, so the specifics of what you require depend how you will
use the data.

I would ask for all alignments, profiles, and surfaces involved from the civils, but that is because I can use acad to
check things.
