Civil 3D training

How has training for staff members been approached by other companies? We
have two of us who have been learning Civil 3D to bring it into production &
would like to begin training the other staff members (8) this fall.

Look in the C3D group. Almost (there are some outliers) every single person
that's been through the change will tell you to get training from a pro.

I'll offer our own services, james.wedding@ either domain below.

James,

I have been talking with your company regarding training. It will come
down to how much the owners are willing to spend up front. I would like to
have everyone trained by pro's, like yourself, but it is not my call. I'm
trying to explain the benifits to having someone train us vs internal
training.

The biggest advantage is that you learn from someone who's seen more than
what's in the books. They can answer questions that don't have tidy answers,
and to some extent are professional teachers now.

The more time I spend teaching, the more I'm impressed by people that do it
all the time. It can be incredibly invigorating and exhausting at the same
time, and the effort to do it day after day astounds me.

If you want to do it in house, you'll get the text, and not much more. I'd
compare it to learning to do interior trim carpentry by reading the manual
on a miter saw. You might get there, but wow, the time you'll waste!

And thanks for talking with us, I appreciate that. Now back to the salt
mines.

I have to agree with James, getting a good consultant to run the training is by far the best investment your company can make. (Shameless plug for you, James).

As for our company and how we did it was a little different from most companies (as after our initial consultation and training, I'm doing all the training), but it all boils down to the cost and effort required. You management has to understand that the training is an investment and have to be willing to pay for the quality that a good consultant can give. Your best bet, to get management to understand, is to run the numbers for them. Produce a realistic ROI for what they are going to spend on good training, as an efficiency increase and be frank about how long it will take to see the benefit of the good training.

My 2 cents worth.
