and that has what to do with my humorous post?
and we don't use that system, sorry
every drawing opened that has an xref in it, the path is studied and if it's a project number the project name variable is set, and
then all subfolders within the project path that contain .dwg files are added to that projectname within the registry...
if the server can't be found it opens a file dialog window and asks the user to locate the projects server. all drawings have a
unique name.
we haven't had a pathing issue in years.

You can use the Reference Manager Extension to easily replace the xref
paths. It has a batch replace feature.
To change the path(s):
1.. On the Start menu (Windows), click Programs > Autodesk > Reference
Manager.
2.. Click the Add Drawings button, and then browse to and select the
parent drawing.
3.. At the Add All Xrefs That are Attached to the Drawings prompt, click
No.
4.. Press and hold the SHIFT key and select all of the xrefs on the right
side of the pane.
5.. Click Edit Selected Paths.
Use one of the following methods to change all the paths in the Edit
Selected Paths dialog box:
a.. Leave the New Saved Path field blank or empty and click OK to remove
the xref paths.
b.. Click the Browse button (...) to browse to a new path.
c.. Type in the new path.
Note: It is usually better to use a Uniform Naming Convention (UNC) path
(for example, \\servername\folder1\folder2...) than a mapped drive
(k:\folder2...) because users may map the network drives differently.
I hope that this helps you
