Cad management from one station.

Hi there. I'm wondering if there is a way to successfully update all machines with, say a service pack, at one time from my machine. Can you push extensions and service packs across a network, or do i need to keep going from desk to desk...?

It possible.  I have seen it done.  I could be
sitting at my desk and Watch the cursor move on screen without touching
anything.  That was a UNIX workstation though, on a mainframe.

Hi eviele!

I'm investing NetOP, as I recently saw a demo at Chicago Comdex... check
out their info at:
http://www.crossteccorp.com/netopremote/index.html

I asked the Rep about prices, since I am looking to remote admin another
office of (1) server & (5) pc's... basically she said that I would need
to acquire the Gateway Module $360 (List) & a (10) pack of Hosts with
(1) Guest Combo Pack at $660 (List), so say about $1,200...

The Gateway S/W resides on the server and you "tunnel" through the net,
and as guest, you access the other pc's, that are hosts, running the
netop host, for admin...

I see they have a "school" version available.

Wonder what the dif is between it and the reg version?

Hi jmorris!

My brief understanding is that the "school" version, is used for schools with
training labs, that an Instructor can take control of all the desktops into
(1) virtual screen and show all users at once a method or task or whatever...

As far as I can tell, that's not built into autocad
at all, although I really wish it were.  If you have ht ebudget for it,
there are a couple server applications that create that sort of functionality -
with the added advantage that they work for all appplication.  MS has, or
had, Systems Managemetn Server.  I bnevr tried it, but I hear that the
learning curve was very steep, and that the price was outrageous.

There is another, newer product from Executive
Software (the makes of Diskeeper and Undelete)called sitekeeper, that does
this.  I don't know anyone yet who has tried it, but the price is
better.

And, of course, if you are good at writing scripts
and batch files, you could do this yourself.  In a MS domain, you can have
login scripts, that run everytime someone logs on.  You could have
that script run a batch file that you update periodically to install updates,
etc.

I have a copy of VNC that I am playing with right now. It is clear that it
is freeware, but it will do the trick. I am going to try it for a update
when the next one it available. I think it has promise. Especially if you
have remote sites, or site spread all over a building.

VNC works great for us, especially when someone is having a "duh"
problem. We have the server installed on all 250 pc's here and keep the
viewer only on MIS staff computers. You can setup a machine so that VNC
runs as a service at boot and the user cannot see or change the
password. When we have a remote site we use tightVNC for it's better
compression control.
