bring on 2010

good morning everyone.

what a year it has been, we've all seen our share of layoffs, lost jobs, and no work. I'm curious to see if anyone out there is actually recovering....Here in Florida, we are not. Most of our work is in the elderly housing arena, we've managed to keep the firm afloat with these projects even though they are few in far between. Our reputation in this area has been a huge advantage for us. But there is still no commercial jobs that require Bank $$. The road sides are littered with half completed housing developments, and construction jobs that have been cancelled. Construction companies are dropping like flies along with many architectural firms... Everything we've done with exception of a couple residential projects has gone through HUD, and now HUD is so backed up it takes months to get HUD approvals.

How is everyone doing? what does it look like on the horizon for you and your company? where are you located?

up here in Minnesota, i have heard the number 45 percent - that is the unemployment rate of architects. Also some of the manufacturers dealing with the construction industry have been hit hard.

There are so many vacant commercial property around here, i just do not see any need to add to that delemma.

I my self do not see the construction industry moving to much forward in 2010.

I believe at last count here in florida, there were 10,000 unemployed architects/project managers....

We have been fortunate enough to survive, but barely. Not many new projects
are coming in, and the ones that are, are not that big. Have had 2 new
subdivisions, 195 lots and 100 lots come in this last coulpe of months, but
after masterplanning, sections go about 40 lots at a time. Goverment work
is getting harder and harder to get, with so many firms bidding. We have
saw several small firms close there doors, and the larger ones taking on
work that they normally wouldn't have time for. I think we are close to
bottom, with a few signs of hope. We have had so many cutbacks here though,
have to pick up extra work outside of here to make ends meet. Be glad when
things get back to normal!
By the way, we are in northern Indiana.

I'm a residential designer in Richmond, VA. The six or so home builders that I regularly work with are doing little if anything. Most all have started doing an addition or two but that is fleeting for them and of little advantage in the long run.
Work is sporadic and low priced. Too many chasing nothing...
The phone has rang once or twice more than usual in the past week so I am hopeful.

New York State - Suburban to Rural area. Most Surveying & Engineering firms have about a 50% cutback in employees and in most cases those left are not working a full week. I don't know how many have actualy closed their doors but I know many small firms are down to the owner with a robotic instrument - iow no emplyees.
I've heard of the principle of one shop now working as a rodman for another.
As with most of the country it seems that the Recovery has only been for the banks and Wall Street.

Toronto Ontario

Our firm never experienced any recession - only continued growth. We have
gone from 100 architects to 200+ in less than 3 years. The projects are
larger, more interesting and of higher profile. I'm on a 4 week vacation to
get over the 60 hour work weeks.

Some older projects that had stalled for a variety of reasons are coming
back on stream, so this looks to go on for another 2+ years.

Hope all of you starts to see this prosperity soon.

The housing market was more than 8 years in the making - may want to thank Barney from Mass. and chris from Conn to name a few.

Bush did a knock up job in 8 years
only a fool could be so blind and make a mess
like he did and then wipe his hands a run
wonder why we have not heard from him
maybe because of how he left things
then you toss in his 2 goons cheney and mccain
who run around like they know what they are doing
running their mouth off to the media every chance they get
no wonder this country is going down the drain
with people like those 3!
hey at least Autodesk is still making money by the fist full!

do you mean the stimulas that was not going to have the unemployment go above 8 percent and create jobs
or do you mean the stimulas and other spending that is going to drive inflation out of this world.
or the health care bill that is going to drive cost out of this world and drive more jobs over seas?

Just wondering what change you are talking about - just to name a few

add the Louisiana Purchase and the Cornhusker Hustle.

Oh and this little ditty.
"That's what I will do in bringing all parties together, not negotiating
behind closed doors, but bringing all parties together, and broadcasting
those negotiations on C-SPAN so that the American people can see what the
choices are," Obama said at a debate against Hillary Clinton in Los Angeles
on Jan. 31, 2008.

I was laid off in Portland, Oregon back in October, but found a new job in
Bend, Oregon by the middle of December. Not the case for many of my former
cow-orkers (some are at a year or more out-of-work).
