BAK files in ZIP folders

Afternoon fellow CAD Guru's -

Looking for some assistance......

Currently I use Windows XP search engine to search for all BAK, ERR, TMP, LOG, etc... files and than delete them to save server space. My problem.....the XP search engine also lists these files when they're located inside a zip file, therefore not allowing me to delete them. (Not sure why users have to zip up BAK files and what not, but it happens!) So how can I go about scanning my server and delete all those files, even when they are located inside a zip file? I am not looking to open every zip file to delete....that would take a few years! 😉

Thanks guys!

I have not had that problem, then again our users do not zip .bak's, that I
know of anyway.

One thought is to search for all zips and make them hidden files. You can
then search for the files that you want to remove and ignore hidden
file/folders, you can set your WinExplorer to view hidden folders, they will
be grayed out, or just "unhide" them when you are done.

Instead of using the search function use the command line.
start button, run, cmd, cd\, del *.bak /s
Make sure that any programs that use .bak files are closed before doing
this. It also can be used with .tmp files, .old files, .sv$ files and
any other file types that routinely get generated by any software.

To unregister Search looking in .zip files, go to Start -> Run -> type in:
regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

Note the spaces.

Thanks for the suggestions! However is it possible to remove them from the zip files globally? I'd hate to ignore them, they are wasting GB's of storage space!

Winzip has a command line program that would
probably allow you to delete from zips using a script.

As for your server cleanup tasks I would recommend
AutoErase.  It
lets you erase files by date limit...ie.  "older than 14 days".  I
like to keep "young" BAKs on my system just in case but delete whatever is older
than 30 days, once a month.  It's $49 but is far less tedious than
search/sort/delete with Explorer.

I use windows scheduler on the server to run a BAT and delete all that
junk daily, after tape backup. If you want more info, drop a line.

Ciao!

Hi fletch97
Did you ever find an answer?

I have looked on the net and still have not found a simple solution.
One would think this is a common problem, with a simple solution for all. But I guess not...

To be clear, the question is what is the simplest way (either software or some kind of batch file) to search the network for zips, open them, delete any BAK inside of them. But without deleting the rest of the zip. And this must be automated as we have hundreds of zip files to search and clean up.
