You can always get a retainer say 15% and then ask for the rest as a COD. If you are talking low amounts (say $500 or less) then this should not be a problem for the company you are working for. If someone baulks explain to them that you need to do business this way to keep your AR down and allow you to work at such "reasonable" fees.
