It is, but it's going up and down as people hammer it.

This would not happen to be the 13th year for AU, is it?

Autodesk historically has had issues with R13 type stuff...:o

I got the email last night, but I was on and registered before that.

I think I got mine on Saturday.

Unfortunately... 😞 no registration for me... this is the first AU I've
had to miss. ~sniff~ (since I've been of age, obviously I'm not quite
old enough to have been at the early ones)

AU 97 was the one in Los Angeles wasn't it? Walking to the conference is
sure nicer than having to ride the buses all the time to get to the
conference. The conference has sure grown since I started going in '96.

heck, it's grown since I started in 2001... weren't there only like
3,500 people that year?

Was it up to 10,000 last year?

I don't remember the numbers from those earlier years, but it wasn't
anywhere near like it is now. I think it was just a shade under 10,000 last
year and I believe that they are expecting 11,000 this year.

The worst year was in 1999 when they held regional AUs instead of just one.
I believe that they had 4 of them around the country and I went to the one
in Dallas. I'll bet there were only 500-600 people there, about a dozen
vendor booths, and not very many varied classes. I remember talk of
discontinuing AU. It was the next year that they took it to Vegas and
things started to get better. When I went in '96, it was in Chicago (Navy
Pier), '97 it was in Los Angeles, then in '98 it was in Philadelphia. I'm
not sure where it was before 1996.

Anyway, it has sure been improving and growing. You started coming at a
good time. I always encourage everyone to go that can.

If I remember correctly (although it was almost 10 years ago) I think AU97 was maybe 2100...in downtown LA....and the offsite event was at Universal Studios....a dozen beer kiosks and only 3 food lines (the beer was ready immediately, and hte food was like 1 1/2 hours later....needless to say I don't remember much of that night.

I also remember the Caribbean night later that week at the library grounds and haivng cigars and cognac in the VIP area (that was the first days of what we now call subscription)

ahhhh...the memories

Wow, yeah, I heard about how much those regional ones bombed.

I've been every year since 01 and they've grown steadily since then.
And, with the exception of Orlando, every one has been really impressive
all around (orlando has some high points, but, lots of low points as a
venue). The MGM Grand and the Venetian in Las Vegas have both been
pretty good venues.

Maybe this is my fourth year...I remember going to something at Navy Pier in 96 - wasn't much to remember - but I do remember something. Wonder if there is a "history" of AU sites somewhere...?

I do remember taking the train to AU 99 - one of the four regional ones. Small - but it did make an impression - then again, so did taking the wrong train back home... 😉

AU Orlando in 2005 was nice. Wish I could have brought the family down for the week at Disney. Skipped 2006 - twins were coming and wife was on bed rest. 2007 was my first experience in Vegas. Teaching this year...and I look forward to it...

some photos from 96 through 2006 here...

:-D I finally made it onto the 2004 photos (last pic).

oh, check this out
http://www.gismonitor.com/news/newsletter/archive/120502.php
"
AUTODESK UNIVERSITY: A BRIEF HISTORY
..
This year marks the tenth annual user conference of Autodesk University
(AU). The last time I attended was in 1994, the 2nd conference, which
was held in Atlanta. I know because the speaker gift, a black clock,
still sits on my desk. I still use the conference cloth bag,
"Compliments of Autodesk and Cadence," regularly. I have one of the two
thick volumes of the proceedings from 1994, the one called Professional
Focus, on my bookshelf. The class I gave that year was called
"Translating AutoCAD Data into Your Geographic Information System" and
discussed the issues in moving data from CAD to GIS.

This is the third year in a row AU is being held in Las Vegas on the
week after Thanksgiving. In 1999 Autodesk made a "wrong turn" and
attempted four regional mini-AUs. In 2000, a unified version came to Las
Vegas, and stayed.

In 1997 and '98 AU was under the umbrella of Autodesk Design World
(ADW), which also included Autodesk's developer meeting (once called CAD
Camp), a conference for Autodesk Training Centers (ATCs), and a meeting
of Autodesk User Group International (AUGI). While scaled down one-day
versions of the developer and training events are held in conjunction
with AU now, the ADW moniker was dropped. AUGI still has a presence and
is considered an honorary sponsor.

In 2000 Autodesk held a separate GIS User Conference in San Rafael,
California. Since then, the event has regularly joined Autodesk University.
