Xref

I've looked around and been unable to find a definitive answer about this
issue. What we would like to do is put our base floor plan on buzzsaw, make
it available to our different engineers at different sites and we would all
xref in that one base sheet from the buzzsaw location. Is this possible?

Thanks

Owen

Owen,

You can very well achieve this. Here is a sequence of steps to be carried
out:

1. Create a project and have a dwg file in it.
2. Create a (Public) project member and assign him to this project.
3. Right click on the dwg file and "Copy public url".
4. Inside AutoCAD 2004, invoke XREF command.
5. Attach the copied url.

NOTE: In AutoCAD set the XLOADCTL to a value 0. So that when you reload it
reloads from the http site
and not from the local copy on your machine.

Cheers,
Thilak

Wow..thats interesting. So what happens we the local firm saves the file.
Does everyone get notification to reload the xref as in 2004?

Steven,

No. There is no automatic notification to reload the xrefs, when you open
the dwg in autocad 2004.
However may be you can setup to fire email as a notification to the users.

I dont just save 4 times a day...I save constantly....and I bet that would
simply get another as well as waste email server space.

To paraphrase your site, "In an attempt to bring you all that is XREFs and
provide the means for each Buzzsaw site member to contribute to this effort,
Autodesk has a solution for posting and sharing XREF files." I thought
Thilak's suggestion was quite clever. You are free to use the refresh button
of the ProjectPoint client, use the ProjectPoint API to schedule automated
downloads at an interval of your choosing (every 5 minutes if you want to
get crazy), or use the subscription capability of a Buzzsaw site to be
notified when an XREF file is updated. If you are going to save many times a
day, there is no way for the ProjectPoint client to know which of these
saves is worth uploading to the Buzzsaw site. This would be true of any
software solution you put in place. At least with Buzzsaw, you have some
options. You may want to automate the uploading of files and have that
happen at set times during the day. So you can attack this issue from the
XREF supplying or receiving side. The choice is yours. At least Thilak has
taken the mystery out of how to set up your XREFs to allow this to be
possible. Thanks Thilak! "Gort, Klaatu barada nikto."

Steven,

The reason end users of AutoCAD would not get to know that the xref file has
been modified on the ProjectPoint site is
due to the fact that AutoCAD doesn't directly refer to the dwg on the PP
site but instead refers to the local copy in the
temporary internet settings folder. And AutoCAD's Xref notification also
refers to this local file and hence doesn't get to
know that the file on PP has been modified.

A workaround for this is to write an arx app or an external app that
monitors the dwg on the PP site and informs the user
of AutoCAD that the xref file has changed and needs to be reloaded.

cheers,
Thilak

Thilak, I respectfully understand the scenario of xref notification. I have
been with the development team of Autocad since release 2000. But a long
time user since R9.

Scott, I do appreciate the additional insight and did also think Thilaks
suggestion is a better scenario than I was previously trying.
