opening dwg

If when I open a dwg file that is marked Edit- I cannot work on the dwg because its not all there. If the dwg has Xref s in it, Is this because there is not the original/master dwg? Is there a way around it?

My guess, and this is just a guess, is that the DWG you are viewing makes an
XREF to another DWG, but the other DWG cannot be found. So it looks like
some of the drawing is missing. You should get the other DWG file (or files)
that the DWG XREFs and put them in the same directory.
