Inputs- Energy Settings

Energy Settings

  • People:  When I go to ‘Results & Compare’ in Revit .  Under ‘Building Performance Factors’ the category ‘People’ shows  1.  How do I make this a more realistic number?  Where is this controlled?
  • Fuel:  I keep getting reports for my domestic hot water usage in Therms.  I’m not using gas in this building.  I’m using an electric marathon water heater.  Where do I control this?
  • Building Infiltration Class:  I have selected “Tight” but what does that mean? Let’s say that this building is required to meet at least 1.0 ACH50 when complete.  Where do I enter this information so that it is reflected correctly in the model?
  • Energy recovery ventilation:  I have yet to see anywhere where one can control the efficiency of fresh air ventilation.  I’m assuming this is “glossed over” with the “Tight” selection in the building infiltration class?  can't this be specified?
  • HVAC System:  I have selected “Residential 17 SEER/9.6 HSPF Split HP <5.5 ton” from the list offered.  In reality, we will be using two Mitsubishi Hyper heat ductless mini-splits (9 ton each with 30.5 SEER).  Where do I control these inputs?

Occupancy: Help topic Reference for Energy Analysis for Autodesk® Revit® -> Occupancy Schedules

Fuel: Make sure you are using “Building Elements for Energy Simulation”

Building Infiltration Class: The help topic Specify Building Parameters has information on what Tight (0.019 cfm/sqft for tightly constructed walls) means.

HVAC System: I don’t see an option to use alternate HVAC systems. The help topic HVAC Systems provides information on the assumptions used for the different options.

Here is the main help topic on Energy Analysis within Revit:

Energy Analysis for Autodesk® Revit®

Hi Chris,

I will answer the items you mentioned in separate post to have specific references for other users in future.

  • People:  When I go to ‘Results & Compare’ in Revit .  Under ‘Building Performance Factors’ the category ‘People’ shows  1.  How do I make this a more realistic number?  Where is this controlled?

Since you are using Space as export category in your energy settings, you can select each space in your model and modify the number of people as following (by default number of people is set based on the type of the building and area per person):

  1. Select Space on your floor plan
  2. On the space properties, Energy Analysis section, select People
  3. You can change number of people as well as Heat Gain per person in this window.
  4. Make all necessary changes and run the analysis again to see the changes (When running the energy analysis, if it asked you to use the current Energy Analytical Model or update, choose update to include the changes)

Here to help if additional clarification is needed, otherwise please accept as a solution so that others can benefit from this information.

The Building Service HVAC options in the Detailed Model section of the Energy Settings are not applied to the analysis—only HVAC Systems from the Energy Model Building Services section of the Energy Settings are used.

If you provide more detail information on the HVAC settings of your model and the results that you see (screen shots) I can provide detailed response.

Thanks. I had just switched to an analysis by Room. Is there a similar way to define occupancy for Rooms?

Hi Mohammad.

I've attached a screen shot of my energy settings.  I've also attached a cut sheet of the Mini-splits I'll be using.  As you can see the SEER value is very impressive at 30.5.  The 17 SEER selection is the best Revit offers.  Can a user specify the system?

Domestic Hot water:  It appears to me that Revit models domestic hot water based on something, but its inputs are not accessible by the user?  It thinks I'm using gas as it gives me data (in my "Results & Compare") dialog in Therms.  And it is pretty clear that it is for domestic hot water.

We're using an efficient electric hot water heater.

Thanks

Chris

The Energy Analysis does not use the infiltration settings specified in Revit. Default infiltration settings are applied, refer to the help topic: Green Building Studio Default Values by Building Type.

If you need to change the infiltration rate of your model, you can use Project Solon to create the customized model. Please find more information on this here:
Project Solon Help
Runset Video

Please let me know if you need more information on Solon and I can provide you more details.

Currently we do not support two HVAC system for one building model. There is a complete list of HVAC systems in GBS website that you can select and run your model as a new alternative run. unfortunately the HVAC list in Revit is not comprehensive.

Here is a link to a video on creating Design Alternative on GBS.

Hello @Anonymous,

You can control the number of people by making the edits in the Space(s), but then you have to use the Insight "Space" Export Category. Insight does not use the Revit Space settings when using the "Room" Export Category.

See the Room/Space section of this Help Page: Advanced Energy Settings.
