I’ve learned that you can ask the model to run using conceptual inputs OR you can have it use the modeled exterior building components. The latter is what I’m interested. First, I’d like to know if I’m doing this correctly.
In Energy Settings, under ‘Detailed Model’ I’ve chosen:
Export complexity = Complex with Mullions and Shading Surfaces
Building Envelope = Identify exterior Elements
Building Construction = No overrides checked in the dialog box. (and I’ve left “shading factor for exterior windows” at 0. Is that right?
If I do this, the model is no longer using generic presets, but using my actual modeled materials, correct?

The help topic Detailed Model Settings has information on the Export complexity and Building Envelope. I am not seeing Building Construction listed as a Parameter when I open the Energy Settings within the RAC basic sample project.
To verify that you are getting different results between “Use Conceptual Masses for Energy Simulation” and “Use Building Elements for Energy Simulation”, you can run the analysis with each and compare the results.

Alright, based on your response I'm guessing these are correct settings. (i'd be happy if anyone else could chime in as well). I've attached a screen shot of my energy settings. Note "Building Construction" 8th down in the Detailed model catagory.
I have no conceptual masses so that run does not work which is to be expected. My question is not about conceptual masses, but about Revit actually using what I've modeled in my project as opposed to generic values.

Hi Chris,
The document that Lance provided for Detailed Model Setting and Energy Settings topic in help are very useful and provides information on the options you have in energy settings and how they affects the simulation results.
The reason that you are seeing the building construction in your settings and Lance does not see it is because you have set the export category to Spaces. You can try to change the export category to Rooms and that option will disappear.
When you are using Building Element mode for energy analysis there are a few steps to follow that are provided in this document (This document is under the process to be added to the help system).
Over all, room or space elements are not required in the Revit model for energy analysis using the Building Elements mode. The role of rooms or spaces in the model, in conjunction with the Export Category setting, is a means of specifying additional information for use in the simulation. The export category of Rooms is the default setting. If no rooms or spaces are present in the model then the energy analysis uses only the Conceptual Constructions assignments.
Here to help if additional clarification is needed, otherwise please accept as a solution so that others can benefit from this information.
Fantastic Mohammad! thanks!
That's just what I needed to know and I'll look through this "Beta" document and I'm sure I'll learn a bit there as well.

Hi Guys,
Does this beta document still exist? you can resend the link, please? (the link sent is broken)
