Glueing from Navisworks in "Shaded" mode (Render Style)

I prefer to glue models from Navisworks over Revit because of the added grid visibility but Navisworks only seems to glue models in "Full Render" mode - even if I switch it to Shaded mode and then Glue, Navisworks automatically switches it back. When I glue from Revit, I don't have this problem and the Shaded visual style appears in Glue. We are a Main Contractor and I am dealing with models from all disciplines - the majority of which use default material appearance settings in Revit. We ask our design consultants to follow a standard trade colour schedule (mostly for visual identification of services) and adjust their material graphics "shading" colours in Revit to suit but we don't specify material "appearance" settings as we like to keep this realistic for rendering.

No doubt I've missed a simple setting somewhere. Is there a way to glue models from Navisworks in Shaded mode?

Cheers

Rob

Hi Robert,

Thank you for submitting your inquiry regarding the display modes from Navisworks to Glue.

The ability to change display modes or transfer the display mode setting from Navisworks into Glue is currently not supported yet.

If this is something important to your workflow, please submit a request in the Idea station for BIM 360 by following this link: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/BIM-360-IdeaStation/idb-p/2032.  The product team reviews all the request posted.

I hope you find this information helpful.

Sincerely,

Frederick

Thanks Frederick.

This is important to our workflow. I have done as you suggested and submitted a request to the BIM 360 Idea Station.

Cheers

For anyone out there looking for a work-around to this, one way that you can retain shaded model display in Glue and still have grid visibility is to export a very small, insignificant model element to NWC from Revit (it won't allow you to export an empty 3d view - I used a bollard outside of the main building) which will drag the grid with it and then glue that from Navisworks as your "GRID_file". Then Glue individual discipline models directly from Revit.

Still wish I could see that grid on my iPad though!

Hi Rob,

This is an issue that I have just come across. I'm fairly sure that something has changed in one of the updates over the last few weeks that has caused this behaviour. Previously we have been able to export NWD files from Navisworks in shaded view, and when the files were combined in Glue, they displayed as expected in Shaded view.

I just tried to upload a set of NWDs to a new project I just created and the view is now stuck in the 'Rendered' type view. As you say, this is quite frustrating.

However, there does seem to be a way around this in the latest version of Glue.

If you view your project, then go to the options menu underneath your user name/icon in the top right corner of the scrren, there is a tab called 'Advanced' on this tab there is an option for Graphics System, it was set to something called 'Autodesk', when I changed this to 'Basic' the view changed back to the shaded view you get in Navisworks and my models were displaying as they did in Navisworks, with all their transparencies and colour overrides being as they were in Navisworks. See the below screenshot, hope this helps you!

It seems like this product (along with Navisworks) is going backwards more than it is going forwards.  This is a critical part of communicating the model to the rest of the team.  Along with getting rid of preset Navisworks views, the current workflow from Navisworks to Glue is essentially broken.  I know there is a masterplan to integrate the two products, but customers are being driven away because of the issue in the interim.  There seems to be a disconnect between real users and the development of the product.

There is a work around, although it is a rather tedious one.  You can delete all of the materials out of the Navisworks file.  This will cause the model to default to the shaded view.  If you can limit the export of the materials from CAD or Revit, then you would make the process a little more streamlined.

Hi Jcchappe,

Thank you for your feedback.  The original post was from two years ago.  We have done some updates since to address the display.

In Glue Desktop, open a model and then go to Options>Advanced>Graphic System, there is an option to check or uncheck Display Materials.  Unchecked is similar with Shaded mode from Navisworks while having this option checked is similar to Full Render mode.

I hope this is somewhat helpful.

But this only applies to the desktop application. The major selling point of Glue is to get the entire team involved and move toward a web-based application where software does not need to be installed. If they have to download and install an application, it just seems like a dumbed down version of Navisworks Freedom.

Hi Jason,

Thank you again for your feedback.

It is true that at the moment, BIM 360 Glue requires an installation of its desktop component to utilize some of its features but majority of its functionality is cloud-based.    As you may already be aware, we are in the process of making Glue fully cloud based in the near future.

Glue and Navisworks was never intended to be the "same" product, each has its own strengths which can support different workflows.  In many cases, both are utilized at the same time to help complete projects.

Please feel free to contact us if there is anything we can do to assist you further.  I do see that you are an EP customer, you should have access to our teams who may be able to help you further if you need assistance in terms of incorporating Glue and Navisworks into your current workflow.

Understood that they are different products.  But, BIM 360 Glue really needs the color customization to come across all software platforms in order to be useful and practical for everybody involved for the sake of the project.  Has there been any updates?  I looked at the advanced features and the customized color still doesn't occur.

It's been about 3 years since I read the first topic concerning the color issue.  Who can I email to really push this feature?  We really want our trade partners actively involved in the project on a daily basis.  Giving them the opportunity to navigate and review/resolve their own issues will certainly expedite our meetings and create more efficiency as well.  There will be more daily collaboration instead of once a week.  Having the ability to quickly see issues by coloring systems will allow that to happen.  Navisworks is great for this of course.

We just had BIM 360 Glue training yesterday and the lack of customized system colorization for the entire model was an issue for us.
