V2.1 - 8

I have been using V2.1 since 1992 and now it looks like I have to upgrade to
V8 to use on my new computer running WinXP. I purchased V5 about 3 years
ago and have never been able to figure out how to use it.
1. Is V8 going to be as hard to figure out as V5? If so I'm doomed ?
2. Can I use V8 to open hundreds of needed *.skd files ?
3. Is there any way to print V2.1 drawings in WinXP ? (I have tried to change
the video drivers to VGA with no luck)
4. I can open the *.skd files in V5, but how do I center the drawing on the
page so that I can print the files ?
5. Can old dogs really learn comlex new programs ?

Lots of questions, but I'm in a panic as I see my business slide off the face of
earth.

I have 5, 6, and 7. V5 was OK, V6 was good with nice improvements and a
patch to make things better.

V7 is worthless for my purposes AFAIC. Too too many bugs and no patches
yet.

V8 I don't know nuttin'.

From what I'm reading, if V5 opens your skd's, then why try to make it
better? V5 is not a difficult program to use but the formalisms are
different from 2.1. Maybe you could find V6 which may open these, but
you'd have to take other advice there. I have no skd files here to try.

Centering the drawing is done from the V5 or V6 program,
File>PrintPreview and the PageSetup screens...

You know, if the program is totally befuddling to you, then this really
isn't where to start talking about what to do. I'll send you a Getting
Started file, written for people who are just getting into the program.
Real simple stuff. You can read and get it all in an hour or less. It's
written for V6 and V7 but much of it will be appropriate for V5. I'll
tell you what to do in the email about centering the printing, or
someone night answer it in detail here.

And don't be dismayed about being an old dog. You're talking to one who
picked it up a few years ago and once you're over the hump it's all
skittles and beer.

I hesitate to recommend Paul Jackson's book, "Hands On A House" because
it's directed specifically at V6-7. But if you want to look over the
promo, you can go to http://www.resolv.com.au/ and look on the right
side. You'll see the book there. The price is in Aussie bucks. U.S.
bucks is about $40 although I seem to have paid much more. I'm waiting
for the coupon for the wine.

Lastly, you should ask any questions here, no matter how foolish you
think they seem. Nothing is foolish except the unasked question. There's
other like yourself who'd like some answers too.

This "old dog"  did just this (v2.1
->v7) this year.  Thought I would never learn the tricks of V7.
But after a STEEP learning curve I found V7 to be quite servicable.  I like
it quite well.  It seems to open all of my 2.1 files and print them quite
well.

V7 is NOT an upgrade of 2.1 but an entirely new
program.  Don't think that any skills developed with 2.1 will carry
over.

I also purchased Autocad LT and never use it.
Too complex for my needs!

Can you send me a copy of your getting started file, I have just started one
of my colleagues off with QC7, he has no experience of CAD at all and I'm
not the best tutor!

TIA

Don't be too quick to let 2.1 go, but if you do, forget 5! As a Sketch fan
since DOS, I would say that 5 was the WORST i.e. most difficult of all.
Using R7, I am quite happy with most of the functions, but 2.1 is still my
favourite.

Advantages of all versions since 5 (a transition model, I expect) is
compatibility with Internet. Knowing nothing about R8, I'd give highest
marks to 2.1 and 7. My subject area (apparel) is far less complicated than
most who leave messages here, but simplicity is central to interaction with
our personal patternmaking product (www.cadterns.com).

Having just had an inquiry about getting 2.1, does anyone here have one to
sell? I would pass the message along if you send info to info@cadterns.com.
Also, if any apparel or other fabric/design/stitchery artists are in the
neighbourhood, I'd love to virtually meet you.

Cheers! Lauraline
