Opening .dwg files in AutoSketch

I am having problems opening a .dwg file. When I choose open and change the 'Files of type' to .dwg I find it in the 'Name" window and click on it (I do see a preview in the window). I then click open and another window opens up which is 'Open Shape File" and asks me to look in the properties folder for a shape file. I don't know what to do at this point. HELP.

Ask the DWG file provider to also supply you with the required shape file that is embedded in the DWG.

So I have to do this each time?

Are you very familar with the program? I have a lot of questions and I was hoping there was more video tutorials on-line. What would be the best way to get all of these questions answered?

Thanks for your reply,

Ray

Hey Dean,

I'm not sure why in AutoSketch when I go to click to open a .dwg file it then opens another window which is 'Properties' and the file type it is looking for is .SHX. If I was to open the file in TrueView by AutoDesk it opens right up. The funny thing is that when I'm trying to open it in AutoSketch I see the drawing in the preview pane.

Preview is nothing but a static BMP raster file embedded into the drawing file: you are in no way looking at the content of the actual file just the last save state.
AS is not AutoCAD (Trueview is AuitCAD).

You all are experiencing classic AS limitations:
