Hi Harvey
I'm afraid that all possibilities with 'File Associations' have been
thoroughly investigated by me, many times.
It *appears* to be a timing problem, in that the time taken to load the
application, be it AS601, QC7 or AS8 it matters not, is too long and that
the information to load the file which is being passed to the app by DDE is
happening before the application has finished loading.
I never experienced the problem with Drafix 4.0 and earlier but then they
loaded in a few seconds.
Once the application has loaded and is resident then double clicking on any
file icons associated with the apps load fine.
My copy of AS8, freshly installed, takes 48 seconds to load, Goodness knows
what its doing..
My copy of AS6 takes 24 seconds to load..
My copy of Drafix CAD 4.11 takes 8 seconds to load..
Is that progress I ask myself? With AS8 by the time its ready to use I've
forgotten what I've started it for. :>)
I have also added my own 'File Types' such as 'Open CAD File (NoDDE)' which
just passes the file name on the command line, e.g. "D:\Program
Files\AutoDesk\AutoSketch\Sketch.exe" "%1"
This method loads the file icon every time without fail, the downside is
that if you then double click on a second icon then that loads another
instance of the program. That's where DDE scores as it loads the file into a
new window in the program that's already running.
Soooo, as far as I can see there is a programming issue here (albeit not
that common) that needs sorting.
Over to you AutoDesk....
