Now that's (not) funny....

Hmm, just went to start work on some mech drawings. Normally I start sketch
up, then navigate to the directory using the open dialog. Today I tried
double clicking the file from explorer and got a message saying "can't find
file blah blah blah" and sketch appears to have quasi terminated. I now
have an application running called Content Librarian, but no Sketch.

Anyone else seen this?

Btw using Win95 (osr2), PIII 600 128MB RAM etc. File is on a mapped network
drive.

Glad I'm not the only one to experience this.

Usually the 'Close Program' dialog (CTRL-ALT-DEL) will show Stech as a
running application even though it's not there. Double clicking on the file
icon for a second time will launch AS and load the file but generally
results in a GPF.

This is the error message I get:

Cannot find the file 'D:\FOLDER\FILENAME.CAD' (or one of its components).
Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries
are available

There has been a previous thread entitled "Missing file(s) at startup" you
should be able to find it if you're interested.

I have found that a defrag usually sorts it out, it seems to me to be tied
into how long it takes AS to load itself before it attempts to load the
file, I suspect it could be a DDE timing problem but I'm not knowledgeable
enough on that subject to be definitive, but I do know that Corel had a
similar problem with WordPerfect 7.0

I use AS6.01 and QC7 and I've experienced the same problem with both
programs.

I used to keep a Sketch drawing on my desktop with hyperlinks to all of the
other drawings I was currently using. Sometimes clicking on it got a
similar message. This may have occurred most often on startup. Sketch would
partially start and then get lost. Usually clicking on it again brought up
sketch and the file. (AS 6.01, Windows 98)

Hello

We have traced similar problems of this to network or power supply problems
when default directories are on mapped computers.

This has happened when people over stack a powerboard with appliances and
then run the network cable over all the power cords. Or low voltage causing
network errors.

Well, it's probably not our network at fault because we ironed out all our
issues with it due to our very finnicky accounting system not liking
anything slightly out of spec on the network. I have tried the usual defrag
etc, even tried it on a machine that is only used as a standby/scanning and
hence has virtually nothing on it to interfere. It's not a biggy, but when
looking to modify a drawing done more than a couple of weeks ago I find it
easier to locate the file in explorer. Ah well I'll just have have to start
sketch, then do a drag-n-drop.

Stephen, did this work at one time? What happens when you open the file from
within the program?

Greig

I hope you don't mind me jumping in but currently my copy of AS601 is doing
it all the time! It started after I had posted my previous message in this
thread. (Thanks Stephen, you must have jinxed it!! )

Past experinece shows that a reinstall usually cures the problem, but at the
moment I can't be bothered so I go down the conventional File | Open from
the AS menu route.

Just a little long winded.

Once AS is running I can double click on a file icon in Explorer and it
loads OK.

I have set up an extra 'Action' in Explorer folder options that I have
called "Open NoDDE" that just passes the file name on the command line, viz

D:\PROGRA~1\AUTOSK~1\SKETCH.EXE "%1"

That works fine but if you double click on more than one icon you get more
than one instance of AS running. (not good)

I for one, having suffered this for a long time, would be very happy to see
it resolved, I have reported it to this newsgroup many times and I'm glad to
see that I'm not the only one that suffers this irritation.

It's just a pain and it's not limited to AS, my copy of QC7 sometimes shows
the same problem. Lets see if my copy of AS8 (still to be delivered) has the
same behaviour.

Best wishes

Opening any of the files from within AS isn't a problem, or if AS is already
running. The problem only manifests itself (for me anyway) when AS is not
running and I double click a file (that is on a network drive) in explorer I
get a message similar to the one below:

Cannot find the file 'D:\FOLDER\FILENAME.SKF' (or one of its components).
Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries
are available.

It now seems that if AS has been run before, without rebooting the machine
inbetween then the problem doesn't manifest itself, so maybe it's some sort
of timing issue.

I don't know if I'd class it as a solution, perhaps a rather poor
workaround.

Perhaps AutoDesk might acknowledge that there may be a problem, as it's not
an isolated case?

Barry could this be an answer:

I am able to replicate this behaviour. It appears to be a defect in
AutoSketch 7 because on re-opening the drawing with mirrored arcs,
AutoSketch reports the drawing contains 3D entities. This warning dialog
only appears if the tick box "Do not show this message again" was not at
some point checked, and I cannot find a way to turn it back on again!
AutoSketch then either ignores the '3D entities' (the arc disappears) or
flattens '3D entities' (arc stays), and this is determined by the settings
in the Import Options dialog when opening DWG or DXF files.

So, the workaround for the customer is:

File > Open, set file type to either DWG or DXF, select the Options button
and check 'Flatten (project to Z=0 plane)' - OK.

I know this sounds strange, but it works!

Eh???

Sorry Greig, I don't see the relevance of this issue to my File Open from an
Icon problem.

Or am I missing something???

Greig

I have just installed AS8 alongside my current installation of AS601

I can tell you that I still have the problem as described previously both by
me and Stephen.

Once AS is launched (either version) then double clicking on the file icon
launches it OK but trying to double click on an icon without AS running
causes the error.

So V8 hasn't caught that bug!

Barry,

I skimmed this thread for giggles and I didn't notice if you had the
File Association worked out properly.

This gets especially sticky when you have two instances (and two
different revs) of the same program installed. I that case you may have
to diddle with the Registry.

In any event, you might want to check Out of
Explorer>View>FolderOptions>FileTypes tab. Scan down to the AutoSketch
Drawing icon and highlight, click Edit, Edit again on the next screen,
and note the application used. Change it if necessary. Back out in the
normal fashion.

Maybe others here can give other tweaks to this operation. Could be
worth a try at this point, just to close out that possibility.

Hi Harvey

I'm afraid that all possibilities with 'File Associations' have been
thoroughly investigated by me, many times.

It *appears* to be a timing problem, in that the time taken to load the
application, be it AS601, QC7 or AS8 it matters not, is too long and that
the information to load the file which is being passed to the app by DDE is
happening before the application has finished loading.

I never experienced the problem with Drafix 4.0 and earlier but then they
loaded in a few seconds.

Once the application has loaded and is resident then double clicking on any
file icons associated with the apps load fine.

My copy of AS8, freshly installed, takes 48 seconds to load, Goodness knows
what its doing..

My copy of AS6 takes 24 seconds to load..

My copy of Drafix CAD 4.11 takes 8 seconds to load..

Is that progress I ask myself? With AS8 by the time its ready to use I've
forgotten what I've started it for. :>)

I have also added my own 'File Types' such as 'Open CAD File (NoDDE)' which
just passes the file name on the command line, e.g. "D:\Program
Files\AutoDesk\AutoSketch\Sketch.exe" "%1"

This method loads the file icon every time without fail, the downside is
that if you then double click on a second icon then that loads another
instance of the program. That's where DDE scores as it loads the file into a
new window in the program that's already running.

Soooo, as far as I can see there is a programming issue here (albeit not
that common) that needs sorting.

Over to you AutoDesk....

I tried this on several of the Dell computers we have here and they all worked
fine except the laptop. For some reason it gives me the error you indicated
when you double click on a file. Computers range from an old 133 MHZ to a few
month new 1.x GHZ unit. Laptop is a 300MHZ (I Think). All have Windows 98 SE.

Does not seem to matter if it is on a mapped drive or its own C drive.
